Besides, while dumping Smitty was idiotic, Randy's bass playing is superior to Valory's and was a great move.

Randy doesn't bring up the Journey stuff - Letterman did. Randy was a very successful studio musician before Journey and a rather successful music executive after that. Journey was his biggest "spotlight" gig until American Idol.
And no wonder he had fun in Journey. It's like being the "temp" in an office - you come in, you do your job and you don't have to deal with the office politics!
