Songs that "get you" every time

Postby ProgRocker53 » Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:06 pm

I can't explain it, but lately there are a few different songs that have been giving me odd feelings... no matter what mood I'm in, these songs seem to strike a raw fiber deep within my heart.

Journey- "Mother, Father"
Rush- "Time Stand Still"
Porcupine Tree- "Lazarus"
Boston- "Hitch a Ride"
Bruce Springsteen- "Born to Run"

It seems like certain moments of this song are "triggers" to that odd feeling. Of course, in "Mother, Father" it's near the end of the song when Smitty nails those drums... "Have faith, believe...." and then Perry goes into angel mode. Absolutely beautiful.

The other one of these songs that seems to hit me the hardest, every time, is "Time Stand Still." I can't put my finger on it. The way Geddy Lee sings "Freeze this moment just a little bit longer..." makes me shiver. Great song overall, I'd put it up there with Rush's best..

Great, great call on this one. Every time I'm in awe. That song transcends generations with its universal meaning. Everybody can relate to those lyrics.

"Mother Love" by Queen...Last vocal Freddie ever recorded. Not only that but the subject matter of the same painted a very depressing picture about Freddie's life and lack of real friendship.

Ones that come to mind are:

I'll Be Over You - Toto
Heaven - Warrant
Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad - Def Leppard
The Flame - Cheap Trick

I guess it's the ballad part and times that I have played them (and now associate them with)

"Time Stand Still" is a great one, my husband is a huge Rush fan. Sounds silly maybe, but he made a video of pictures of our kids with that song.

"In Loving Memory" from Alter Bridge for me, after losing my mother.

There are many others too, for all sorts of different reasons, lol.

Love a lot of the choices mentioned so far, especially I'll Be Over You, Time Stand Still, and Lazarus. There's a million songs that "get me," here's a few:

Elton John - Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - This song is epic and beyond its time. The Funeral For a Friend portion never fails to give me shivers, love all the sounds going on

Rush - Nobody's Hero/The Pass/Bravado - Some more great emotional/transcendent lyrics from Peart and delivered great by Geddy. The latter two also have two of Lifeson's finest solo moments.

Neal Schon - Send Me An Angel. From "Beyond the Thunder," just a great song from Neal featuring his trademark melodies, fast legato runs, and also one of my favorite tones of his of all the time, the chorused glassy clean lead tone ala TBF. Really good feeling on this one

The Guess Who - Dreams. A lesser-known "deep cut" from the 70s featuring imo one of Burton Cummings's finest moments as a vocalist and lyricist. Classic 70s. The second part of the song features a string section that really just "does it" for me.

Todd Rundgren - It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference. Todd Is God, enough said.

The Moody Blues - December Snow. From their "December" Christmas album, but not really a Christmas song aside from the month theme. Really moving, melancholy ballad with good lyrics.

Marillion - Sugar Mice. Epic lyrics, epic delivery, epic guitar solo. Fish Marillion was the best :(

I could go on, just a few that I've been listening to today.

When I was WAY younger, I was recording a Live Elton John broadcast on the old reel to reel machine. It was going on past my bedtime so I asked my dad (who is not that interested in music. Certainly not MY music) to monitor the recording and shut it off when it was done. The next day he mentioned that Funeral for a Friend gave him the chills right when the guitar makes it's entrance after the keyboard parts. Guess a great song has that effect on many people.

Kudos on your Rush picks, ehwmatt, and on the Marillion!

Other than Rush, Journey, and PT I don't think any other band shakes me to my foundation as much as Marillion does. The Fish-era albums are absolutely powerful. Great poetry and very touching music... I LOVE those four albums. I really need to check out their modern output sometime.

Dude, Hitch a Ride has the most unbelievably melodic and perfect guitar solo I've ever heard. The way it starts out and then the harmony guitars layered and the way the song ends on a solo instead of more singing is just sublime.

Speaking of RUSH, "Subdivisions" always gives me the chills right at the intense build up near the end of the song and the drum flourishes at the end of the song. Whew!

I'm a big tough man, so my friend was shocked to see me cry in happiness and emotional overdrive when they played "Subdivisions" at the show I went to. That's one of my top Rush tracks, in fact it was the track that got me into the band.

This is a great thread!

"Waiting in the Weeds" ~The Eagles
"Anyway" ~Steve Perry
"Devil's Arcade" ~Bruce Springsteen
"How Many Words" ~Blake Lewis
"Somethin' to Hide" ~Journey
"Boys of Summer" ~Don Henley
"Heart Turns to Stone" ~Foreigner

And if anyone is familiar with Hairspray
"You Can't Stop The Beat" (the Broadway version, not the film) makes me cry everytime!

Specifically the line;
"Tomorrow is a brand new day
And it don't know white from black"

It doesn't matter what mood I'm in, when I hear that song and start thinking about there being no racism anywhere in the world ever again... BOOM! I'm a sobbing mess. :P
"Drinking beer is easy. Trashing your hotel room is easy. But being a
Christian, that's a tough call. That's real rebellion!" ~Alice Cooper

I feel your pain, brother! Today's an absolute mess compared to last week's snowfall though. The combination of 4 inches of rainfall plus all the melting snow has resulted in the local rivers and creeks rising at a scary rate. I live a quarter mile from a creek, but I looked out my window today to see the freakin' thing in my neighbor's yard... It won't come up to my house, thank goodness, because we live on a hill... but it's still scary how fast that creek came up!

For me there are many as a lot of songs remind you of a certain point in your life. But here's a few off the top of my head:

Journey-Faithfully
Warrant-Heaven
Don Henley-Boys of Summer

GREAT song...

....the hidden track on that album, "Terry's Song," is amazing. I would die a happy man, if somebody honored my memory with a song that special. Springsteen's got a gift and that tune proves it alone.

I can't get into the modern stuff... I've tried. Not only is the voice different, I just don't get the direction they've taken on a lot of stuff. I'm far from an "original group" snob (loved Van Hagar, Augeri era Journey, Styx minus DeYoung, REO minus Richrath etc etc), I just don't like it. I've tried my hardest.

Did you happen to catch DT on their tour last year? They played Surrounded with a segment of Sugar Mice before the piano/vocal outro of Surrounded. It was incredible.

We got the same shit happening here. Rain on top of 16 inches of snow in just the last 2 storms. Looks like some nasty flooding again this spring. We had a "Flood of the Century" 2 years ago and another one the year after. Looks like 3 "Floods of the Century" in 3 years according to the experts. Last years floods turned a massive field into a lake that washed out the road home from work. I managed to cross it when the water was only up to the bottom of my car door. Shortly after and I would have been trapped at work. Most of my 50 minute ride is along a main river that flooded.

Unfortunately I couldn't catch DT, I was overwhelmed with work when they came through the area.

I'd mark out bigtime for the "Sugar Mice" bit.. I've heard many amazing things about Dream Theater and the little cool things like that they do live in concert.

I've listened to a bit of the most recent Marillion album but that's about all I know of their modern output... from my limited impression it kinda sounds like they're doing cheap Radiohead imitations.

Check it out. Surrounded's one of my favorites, and this arrangement is great. Only thing I don't like is JR's solo, too wankish for my tastes, but hey it's JR, what do you expect.

Absolutely. This is probably my favourite Rush song, simply because of the lyrics and the way Geddy sings them. My favourite moment of the song though is the part where he sings... 'Summer's going fast, Night's growing colder, Children growing up, Old friends growing older'. Great stuff.

Another song that always gets me is 'Space Station No. 5' by Montrose, and especially when Sammy does it live. The riff on that is phenomenal.
