Journeys worst ever ballad?

Valory may have had a hand in the Can Do lyrical travesty, as he has a cowrite.

Homemade Love, though, is fantastic.
Lyrics might sound weird at first glance, but the latent meanings are pure RNR sin seeking.

Butterfly. It's slightly worse than Beyond the Clouds.

Agreed.......love the bluesy feel of that one. 'Can Do' gets my vote for worst Journey song to date.

Open Arms always comes to my mind, but I think the worst ever was Don't Be Down on Me Baby.

Beyond The Clouds was amazing whoever said that... one of the best off Generations. I love the interplay between Neal's guitar and SA's voice.

I really tend to like the TBF and Arrival ballads with the exception of Loved by You (which still has a beautiful piano intro). Open Arms has to be it for me. The difference between a great Journey ballad and one that I skip over more often than not is the presence of Mr. Schon's backing "vocals" - namely the way he crafts a melodic, completely memorable solo over almost every ballad. When I Think of You, When You Love a Woman, All The Way, Faithfully, Why Can't This Night Go On Forever, the upcoming After All These Years... Neal never fails to amaze me in that regard.

As for Patiently, first of all, great song. Second of all, I wouldn't really call it a ballad in the true Journey sense - that song is actually closer to Journey's progressive side with the interesting chord inversions, the haunting acoustic to the crunchy electric transitions and such. If anything, I'd call it a "prog ballad" rather than a "power ballad" in the vein of Queensryche's Silent Lucidity or even some Rush songs.

Trial By Fire is certainly no ballad. It is however one of the best Journey songs every recorded, a whole new level of song writing for the lads from Journey that day

it ain't no rock song either. It's a meandering piece of garbage. terrible song that goes NOWHERE.

What can you tell me about that song, Red13? Really, I'm serious. I'm pretty conservative, not an adventurous person, so I just don't get the latent meanings.

My understanding on Journey's songwriting is, before JC came along, SP carried the main load for the lyrical contents to their songs. Greg did some writing, but the others were mainly musicians. The music was always good, but some of those early songs, I mean, are so lame--lyrically challenged.

2 words.
"Barely Legal." (Jellyroll love). And again, you can't tell just by listening, this came out later in interviews.

Maybe so, but you also have plenty of gems in there.

C'mon, you guys. TBF, the song, is a masterpiece. I get the message in it. The album, while not for every rocker's taste, is also good, not great, but a good Journey record. Take a few of the slow songs out, make it a 12-song album, and it would have been a great Journey comeback album.

Arrival is supposed to be more "Journey sounding", but it also had too many tracks in it. After the 1st 4 or 5 songs, which I thought were very good, SA started sounding (and singing) the same songs down the line. I lost interest and couldn't wait for the record to be over.

I love TBF. Fantastically cinematic atmospheric song. Tremendous mood and a great pull from Neal's beyond the thunder CD approach to just putting across a feeling. If anyone could put words and melodies to Neal's beyond the thunder tracks and make it work, it's Perry and that's what I think they did here.

"Faithfully" makes me skip to the next track.

I like "Open Arms" though, so call me contrary. I can take it.

and I like "Its Just The Rain" - purely because of that high note Perry sings near the end. I wait for that moment and when he sings it....wow! It makes up for the twee song IMO.
