 You do have a point except when it comes to gaming. Mac's are a little more reliable, but not that much. They used to be way more reliable, but MS has made some huge strides in leveling the playing field. Apple better keep being inovative in the personal entertainment department, ie: ipod, because their computer devision is in serious trouble soon.

It's similar to the Betamax/VHS wars. Beta was better, but you could record up to 8 hours on a VHS tape.

Not true. The Mac is gaining ground in the PC market. Because of the popularity if the iPod and iPhone mare and more people are switching all the time. They are still some of the best personal computers out there aside from gaming and have the most stable OS out there. The best part is you really don't have to worry about viruses.

You don't have viruses because people write viruses to affect as many people as possible. If Mac had the lead in the market share, they'd need an antivirus.

Mac's had it's peaks and valleys, but they've never outsold even one individual pc maker. I still stand by what I said. If they don't stay on top with the personal entertainment field or find a niche somewhere else, when the ipod craze wears off, they'll be in big trouble.

Mac has a convention every year where they invite hackers to come and try and write virus's for a mac, and no one has been able to write a harmful virus yet. one person managed to create one that was harmful on the computer he wrote it on, but once it was on another computer it didn't have root and just died. os X is UNIX. thats why its better. Plus, you can dual boot it with windows, so theres not point in having a pc if you like the mac OS, everthing can be done from one computer.

Hey sarah, although it doesn't really show in the end result, some of the inspiration I used to build Jeff's site was based on the 300 trailer.

I have very limited experience with a Mac, but what I did see was very nice. I hope I'm wrong and they do survive though because the competition helps everyone. I'm a bit of a gamer so a Mac wouldn't work for me.

I know for sure though that there are viruses that target Mac machines. There is one in particular called the Macarena. I'm not sure that it affects a Mac in the same way as they do PC's, but they're out there.

Well you are misinformed. You need to read up. They are at least number six in the PC market. And they are predicting to have at least 12 % of the market share by 2012.

The data I looked at was as of 3rd quarter 2007 and it showed all major pc makers ahead of Mac. It also showed Mac with a 3.2% stake in the overall market share. Although it did show a 34.4% growth over the previous year. That is largely attributed to the popularity of the iPod acquainting people with the Apple name. Your data is more current however, and very impressive.

I might be, but maybe not. Your schedule shows Estimates. I posted a link to a page with a similar schedule for that same time period and the results are very different.

There are plenty of reasons to have a PC. First of all, there is no guarantee that XP has drivers that are compatible with Intel based Macs. The majority of businesses (and programmers) use PC based computers, whether if they run Windows or Linux. PC computers are less expensive and this reason alone is a good reason to choose a PC over an iMac. And believe me, what you hear about hackers not being able to write a harmful virus for a mac is bunk. If it was worth their while to flood the mac world with viruses, they could do so very easily. Yes, unix based systems are very good. Not completely locked down. As long as you have a computer (no matter if it's Windows, Linux, or Unix) networked into the internet, there is always a danger for viruses or theft.

Macs are good for computer novices and artists. PCs are good for those on a budget, those who do Microsoft programming, and of course those who are gamers. Linux, IMO, is the best if you're truly a computer nerd like me...lol!

And you missed the vista 64 part? XP because I trust it, and Vista because I wanted to be able to get used to it while they work the bugs out. I just installed the new Service Pack 1 for Vista that came out the 18th. We'll see how it performs now.

I "did" originally have XP Pro X64 to put on it, but there seems to be a lack of support and drivers for it when it comes to my hardware and programs, so I went with my trusty XP Home.

No, didn't miss the Vista part, I'm just not to high on Vista. Besides it's attractiveness, Vista doesn't really offer anything over XP that warrants a need for upgrade. I soured on the product after Microsoft pretty much had to gut the project (taking out the new file system and quite a few other "new" features that was supposed to have been in Vista.) When my 64 bit system was running, I found out quickly I did not want the 64 bit version of XP for the very reason you just stated. In my opinion, the 64 bit version has been a flop. And really, it came out during a time when it wasn't going to be supported that much (much of Microsoft's programmers were on the Longhorn (Vista) team.) The biggest thing that Vista has done for folks is to force them to sink major bucks in hardware upgrades to their systems, which is plain out ridiculous. And what is even more ridiculous is the many versions of Vista. That part is just plain out ignorant and wrong. Stick with a home version and a pro version and be done with it.

Alright, I'm off my soap box now....
