A cool, decent song.... a mash-up of Be Good To Yourself and Never Too Late, basically.

Nothing they haven't done (better) before, but still a good song. Formulaic, but good.

I like it. Arnel's vocals are pretty good. Sometimes he has the early-era Perry feel, other times he has a bit of "husk" to his voice. Nice.

Vintage Neal in the solos. Soaring melodies, mini-shred sessions....

Definitely has that "hit single" vibe to it that I'm sure fans will love. Probably a good choice to lead off the album with.

Upon listening once I agree.

I'm feeling like his leads at times (and a damn lot of the time live) are all soloistic.

Like he's playing his solo from the 2001 dvd in the Journey songs.

Good stuff.

I know I'm gonna get slammed for saying this, but to me his voice sounds more like Jimi Jamison than Perry. Unlike the classic covers, I don't get Perry "clone" out of that song at all.

Not that this is a bad thing.

Maybe this is Journey's version of 5150. Van halen stated they went for a very commercial sound to ease the transition from DLR to Sammy. They wanted it to be as listenable as possible to overcome the hurdle of switching lead singers. Now I am not comparing quality of the two, just the idea. Maybe Journey specifically wanted to sound as much like that era of the band too grease the way for accepting Arnel. And maybe it is most present on this song, which is why they picked it for lead single?

I agree that Neal has been a little stuck in the "listen to me" playing instead of playing what the song demands...

I like that you gave a chance...Am I wrong that you still HOPE for another song by J that you will love?

hmmmm. Good question. I will never feel the same way about Journey because Steve Perry is not there. I still love Neal and would listen to anything he does. I like Arnel and think he's got some great pipes, but his vocals do not move me at all. I can count on one hand the singers who touch my soul and Steve Perry will always be at the top of my list. I will still listen to Journey's new material and will probably see a show as I have on every tour they have ever done since 1980.

I wish them all the best.

I wish it was 5150-ish. May have been comemrcial, but defintiely a left turn. Sounded like nothing they had done before.

I am listening on crappy standard work computer speakers so I can't even begin to comment on the production/mix. But I know I can easily hear the vocals. Something that seemed difficult with the Augeri-era.

Funny thing is nowadays I don't hear anything wrong with the mix on Red13. I remember it being jarring when I first listened but now I am accustomed to it and it works fine for me.

Well, they're about 12 years late on the whole "ease the transition" or "greasing the way" thing.

+1

It's pretty generic for the Journey formula. I almost started singing "Be Good To Yourself" in the chorus. It's not bad, but far from good.

Arrival Part Deux anyone?

Very glad that classic rock is back. Reminds me of the 80's and the music I listened to. Yeah, definitely a 5150 resemblance, but never the less, love Arnel's voice, the chores and the guitar track. I'm definetely in line for the album release. Fuck....now all I need to do if find a Walmart nearest me and get mapquest to help me get there.

They tried that already with ARRIVAL, Dave. We all know how that went, when they didn't get any support from Sony. I have a feeling REVELATION will be much different however and Journey could be on the charts again, if they play their cards right.

This has nothing to do with his race - but his accent is *so* distracting to me in the song it's just very difficult for me to understand what he's singing. Average song - too 90210-ish not to be cheesy (and I love the 90210 theme!)

First, I'm glad we all can actually hear the vocals again...haven't had this since SP.

As many of you are saying, I do agree that it's very Journey formula. It would be nice to hear them break out of the box a bit. Maybe they do this on some of the other songs.

I too don't hear any Perry in the vocals. But I must say Arnel sounds pretty good. A great melodic rock voice. Can't dispute that.

Bottom line for me is I'll always prefer Perry. Just no comparison. But I'll take it for what it is.

Cheers...

An old guitarist buddy of mine called them "Dig Me Licks"....LOL!

Yeah, Neal has caught the shred bug bad lately, huh? He always did it, but I think its been a little more up front on the last few records....

Good to see ya bro!
You are right that Arrival was an attempt at the same thing, but that one was strongly dictated by the record label...forced. If this is more natural it will work better. Of course it was also the record label that ultimately created the demise of Arrival as well. So yes, I think things will be different this time around. But I still don't see a huge radio presence. I hope I am wrong. Journey need to hammer Top 40, Hot AC, and AC with this song...not just Classic Rock and definitely not Active Rock. Neal wants to be a rock band, but their kind of rock lives on Hot AC and AC. AC is not just ballads. And Top 40 loves a "comeback".

I would say it was a fairly non-descript song. Didn't do much for me, at all. I thought Arnel sounded good, but the song bored me to tears! The ballad I heard (Don't recall the name of it) from Vegas sounded SUPERB and loaded with commercial potential!

Let 'em build UP to that.

That's one thing forgotten in this day and age. Now it's all about hitting it out of the park on the first swing. Used to be that you built it up, growing gradually but solid. Personally I hope they wait to release the ballad until the 3rd song, regardless of how much attention either of the first two singles may get.
