So Are We Fans Or Not?

Postby scarygirl » Sat May 31, 2008 12:18 pm

All this whining; all this complaining. God knows I've done my share, but all this blame SP crap for the state of Journey is getting kind of old. Should Steve have taken so long in making his decision about surgery knowing he also had a committment to the band? No. But Neal waiting almost 8 years or whatever the amount of time between ROR and TBF for someone who was so OBVIOUSLY not coming back was ridiculous too. And I for one, believe SP when he says that he told Jon and Neal back in 86 that he wanted to stop completely. Just because they decided to take it as oh, he just needs some time off, he'll be back wasn't his fault.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm a Steve Pery fan, and always will be. Furthermore, the rerecordings were a pretty shitty thing to do, and I take it as a way to erase SP from memory. That said, I am completely looking forward to the new album, and hold no grudges what so ever for them moving forward.

From what you have said, doesn't matter what is said or printed..you've made up your mind. So what's the point?

I haven't posted in a LONG time, because couldn't care less about the current Journey.

Journey ended for me when Perry left. Sure, he was a jerk and drove Rollie away and messed up the Frontiers cover and the ROR album, but for me Journey will always be the memories I have from 1978 - 1983.

Now I take my leave again.

No? What's your point? I'm simply saying that we are all responsible for our choices, for better and for worse. They all at one point or another made bad decisions, and I think it highly unfair to scapegoat one person. Same with Tape Gate. The band knew, and allowed that to happen. Hell, the record label had to have known too. These thngs don't happen under rocks.

I wish the guys well, I really do, but in my Journey, Steve Perry was the lead singer. I have always been a Steve Perry fan, and I always will. All this stuff about what happened in the band, why they aren't together, why they don't speak to each other, will never be truly known my anyone but who was there. The band members. Truth is all in the interpretation, and I'm sure everyones is different. We will never know and I'm OK with that.

I respect your decision, and I, for one, appreciate you not starting endless topics and making post after post banging us over the head with how you despise everybody currently associated with the band. Not that that ever happens around here...

I don't have a point. You were the one that said all of this debate back and forth was pointless, cause you've determined in your own words that "And I for one, believe SP when he says that he told Jon and Neal back in 86 that he wanted to stop completely. Just because they decided to take it as oh, he just needs some time off, he'll be back wasn't his fault."

So, okay..that's what you've determined and believe. Others have different beliefs and feel the need to express it. Just because you've made up your mind, doesn't make others wrong for wanting to express their opinions. That is all.

Never said that people aren't allowed their opinions. I pointed out quite evenly where they were both wrong. I just can't stand the scape goating of Perry.

Like I said..you've made up your mind, so why call people out just because they differ in opinion? Again, that is all.

Edit: Fyi..I should have mentioned that as a statement not a question. I'm not looking for a response, nor care either way.

Is it that I'm calling people out or defending Perry? The threads of people that have completely turned against him outnumber my singular thread. And trust me, I would hardly be the first person to post here calling people out. And, if you actually read my post I wasn't calling anyone out, just stating my opinion of the situation.

You may notice that I don't get into to many of the heated discussions unless I feel like someone is jumping on me personally and thats because of whats stated above. Steve Perry is my favorite singer of all time, but I enjoyed SA and now Arnel. I have actually been reading this forum way before I joined, so I had a good Idea of what went on. Anyway, the point is that Im still a happy fan because Im here for the Music (whoever is singing) and to have fun. And to quote Rick, its none of my business. I don't feel like Steve or Neal or Jon has done anything to me personally so why argue.

Some good points. I hadn't thought about the angle that if Neal was so ready to re-form the group, why did he wait 8 years? I guess, though, there was Bad English and other projects that kept him busy. Still, an interesting take. As for the re-recordings - good Lord, that just makes me want to hurl.

According to Perry in the interview. it sounds like they were still legally a band, no divorce yet. So apparently Perry hadn't completely quit the band.

Yes, still a fan...I can say I'm not happy with certain choices they've made (like re-recording the classics), but bottom line is that I love Journey (love SP)...my fave band...stellar musicians, I like these guys. Heck, they aren't ax murderers or child molesters...so I can not understand such extreme hatred on the part of some fans. Even 'tho I am a SP devotee, I liked SA, JSS and I like AP now...all seem to be good down to earth talented people.
I'm sure the band will do stuff in the future that will piss me off for a short time, but who doesn't? It's like being married! LOL.

It just seems to me that every time SP does a full interview, baring his soul, we’ve got people who want to denigrate and call him names. Why does he even bother?

If he stays under-the-radar (silent), he doesn’t care about the fans. If he talks, he’s a drama queen. WTF? He can’t win either way.

The truth is, everyone is a Perry fan … well, maybe with the exception of JoePa. Last year, right after JSS was abruptly dumped, there was a rumor started that SP was coming back to Journey. This place almost exploded. Lots of cautious optimism, but universal excitement and approval. People who were previously Detractors jumped on the bandwagon .. again, with the exception of JoePa. Of course, we realized quickly that it was just a pipedream as SP himself crushed the rumor. And it’s back to business as usual.

The sad part is there will be no J reunion (no closure as SJ calls it) in their lifetime, or ours. I think this is what causes most of the backlash against SP.

I don't think the re-records are a way to erase Perry. No way he can be erased. I would have loved to have heard JSS's voice on them instead, & I don't think it would have been disrespectful of Perry, esp. since JSS has always stated for a long time now how much of an influence Perry was to him as a singer. His version of SHML (on his Essential Ballads cd), it's simply stunning. I know I'm probably in an itsy bitsy minority who thinks this about the re-records, but I'll listen to them as just other versions of great songs. They won't erase Perry.

They won't erase Perry.

that's true, m. I hadn't thought of it that way. just an cover of a great song. not an erase. thanks!! i was having trouble wrapping my head around this re-record concept. didn't they do it cuz wally wanted them to? i wonder if they REALLY wanted to. compromise is the name of the music game sometimes.

You're welcome! That's how I look at it. And you know how wonderful they would have sounded with Jeff's voice, but we have to keep that to ourselves you know, us damn "fawners"

The new greatest hits package was the original WalMart deal.
No GH. No deal. I applaud the band for using this deal as a vehicle to mass distribute their new music.
I think the live DVD is also a great way to promote this year's tour.

The guys aren't disrespecting anyone. And Irving Azoff is not a dumb@ss.
They're keeping this 35 yr old company alive and well, VERY well.

And our friends in Bentonville aren't too dumb either.
