ONLY NINE? Those were only the nine most productive years of Journey yielding the most hits, etc. What a way of marginalizing. As much as I'm looking forward to hearing the band live for the first time ever, I can tell you in own experiences that whenever I bring up Journey whether it be to a friend or out and about, the average person, A. Doesn't know they are still together, and B. Know that Steve ever left. That makes him synonmous with Journey and any singer that comes after him except again to the fans on this board as Mr. Lead singer Who? I have no problem with them going forward, but I do have a huge problem with what I see as the GREAT PERRY WHITE OUT.

Arnel is great in his own way, but he's no SP, and I wish people would stop making the comparisons.

If Perry opened for Hannah Montana I'd consider going to see him. I think she's too big for him, though.

They didn't change the name when he entered the band so they shouldn't have had to when he left.

Best reasoning I've heard on this subject so far.

Well, let's see....how many hits did Journey have before Steve Perry????............what was the reason why he was brought into the group?????
The point I am trying to make is all of the commercial success that Journey had was with Perry and if they would have just changed the name when they split, maybe it would have saved a whole lot of arguing, criticisms and bad feelings.

Forgive the intrusion, but one edit for you scarygirl. You said Perry's nine years yielded "the most hits". I think you meant to say "the only hits".

I don't think they should have changed the name, it's Neal's band too. But I still think they should have done a Van Hagar with JSS and moved on..........instead of trying to relive the Perry-era with somebody that sounds just like him.

yes, and then you go from a band that can at least survive making a whole bunch of people happy reliving their youth when they go on tour....to a band that can't sell out the local bar. If the band wanted to do anything, that was their only choice. Had Bad English come out in 1998, they wouldn't have done anything either. It was simply the climate of music at the time.

I didn't see any of the people at the concerts complaining that "this wasn't Journey". Based on crowd reaction, people were impressed. From a purely financial standpoint, it is MUCH better to entertain 20,000 people a night than to entertain 20 people a night.

I find myself in the awkward position of defending both Perry and Neal... when the Perry Loons come here and slam Journey, I defend Journey, when the new Arnel loons say that Arnel is better than Steve Perry, I want to smack the batcrap out of them too. I love them both and will defend them both. :D

Arnel's Arnel. The loons are pissed 'cause Jcrew just hit a home run without Mr. P. I like SP as much as the next guy but come on, this "who's better" stuff is getting old.
band has been around for 35 years. Perry was only there for 9 of them.
First off, I don't fall into the "band is no band without Perry" camp. I personally don't care if he comes out with a new album or not. I don't know who wronged who and don't care because I wasn't there.

That said, the above statement is a silly "marginalization" excuse. I get what you're trying to say, but think of it this way:

- How many albums did they sell during the Perry years?
- How many albums did they sell during the non-Perry years that were not
- Perry-era catalog sales?
- Greatest hits of Perry era?
- Live albums of someone else singing the songs Perry made famous originally?

Nine years or not, that era was obviously a major part of why many people are fans today. Trying to diminish someone on a "timescale" is kind of silly.

Why not have Andrew create a new forum for Steve Perry? Then each faction can have their own yard to play in.

Talk about short shelf-life.

I actually stayed out of there pretty well, believe it or not.

Remember who was the one who started bringing the fight down there and soon had the place looking like Grenada after the incursion?

This thread is funny .... feels deja vue. We've got fans -- some old, some new -- making the same kind of claims and arguments that were being thrown around in the SA-era.

Looking forward to what the next great Lead Singer experiment will bring.

What constitutes a "home run" in your book Stone Cold?

An album I can enjoy start to finish. Not wanting to skip songs as soon as they start. Escape, Frontiers and Revelation fit into that category.

TBF is close but sometimes I don't have the patience for #7 DBDOMB, #9 COTS and the jamaican journey song at the end.

Arrival could've been a super album but got bloated with the filler and too many ballads.

Generations. Do I need to explain that one?

Admittedly, FITH "remade" on Disc 1 may end up being a deal breaker since I thought the original was too long and not "hooky" enough. I didn't hate the original so I'm pretty much neutral on that one.

I'm not deluded to think this'll chart above rap and emo that's popular but its a good tight disc. I'm only talking about Disc1, by the way. Have no use for D2 at all.

As for all the SP "new release" talk, I don't get it. Enjoying new Journey doesn't negate the older stuff. If he releases something SOMEDAY, great. If not, whatever.

Well, I guess the GQ interview got our hopes up again...

Enjoying new Journey doesn't negate the older stuff.

No, but the older stuff can often negate new Journey material given the chasm in quality between the two.

If he releases something SOMEDAY, great. If not, whatever.

I'm nowhere near the "whatever" level of acceptance about that - but yes we've got a pretty substantial body of work to enjoy. More than many all-time legends were able to give their fans....

Okay...then deduct ten years from Journey's "35 years". Journey were out of the game too from 86 to 96.
