He is a great drummer, but I have never been a fan of the tone of his drums, they sound flat.

I've only very recently been able to learn how to pick out good drum production, from bad drum production.... and good drum tone, from bad drum tone.

That said, great playing can transcend shortcomings like this... just like great singing/emoting can transcend a bad natural voice. And I think Deen really rose to the occasion and took some names on Revelation.

I agree with you, Dean is fantastic, but I wish he would change his tone a bit, to me it doesnt sound right.

Me not being a drummer, I wouldn't know. How can a drummer change their tone, as in with their set? Doesn't one have to tighten drumheads and stuff to a certain degree to tune it and such... and of course I'm assuming different-size pieces have different tones. Give me a quick tutorial if you can. :D

My ONLY complaint on Deen's "tone" here is the snare.
It sounds a bit "flat".
Coulda sounded bigger, some effect added.
But that's not Deen's fault...

Deen's one of the greatest ROCK drummers in the world.

If you want to hear great sounding drums then listen to Marc Droubay's drumming on Survivor's albums. His drums have the best tone to my ears. And he's an extremely underrated ROCK drummer too.

Dude I always forget to specify "ROCK" when talking about drummers, guitarists etc. My expertise and knowledge doesn't branch into stuff like jazz, etc. :(

Thanks for tossing that up there. You wouldn't believe how often I get lambasted when talking to people by saying stuff like "Neil Peart is the best drummer alive"

Peart is universally recognized as more than just a great rock drummer. Same for guys like Steve Smith, Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, etc.

True but there's a shocking amount of people that think he's overrated.

Then again these people are on YouTube and for some reason that place seems to overflow with douchebags on the video comments.

I consider Steve Smith to be the #1 greatest all-around drummer of all time. Of Course Steve Smith is a Jazz drummer first and foremost.

Is Neil Peart overrated? Well, I consider him to be one of the greatest ROCK drummers ever. However, I don't consider him to be the #1 greatest ROCK drummer ever as some people do.

Peart is also a decent Jazz drummer. But he really doesn't compare with Steve Smith when were talking about Jazz.

Marc is the man, one of the main reasons I keep listening to Survivor all the time.

IMO I think Simon Phillips has the perfect sounding drum kit, and it also helps that he is an absolute drumming perfectionist.

What is it with Toto, and Journey too for that matter, having so many sensational drummers?

Dunbar, Smith, Castronovo, Phillips, Porcaro. 5 of the best right there... (ROCK)

Peart has done at least one Jazz tribute album, maybe more, I don't know. I'm sure that one of the die-hard Rush fans can tell you what/which Jazz album/s he's done. Or a Google search.

Yeah, Journey started with the excellent Prairie Prince on drums, then Aynsley Dunbar who is one of the greatest ever, then Steve Smith who is IMO the greatest drummer ever, then Mike Baird who was actually one of the better sessions drummers of the 1980's, and then Deen Castronovo who is one of the best.

Simon Phillips is another one of my favorites. But unfortunately he was only hired by Toto because of the tragic death of Jeff Porcaro.

Neil is a great drummer. As for the "#1" thing, I always find these silly. It's not like the people making that assumption have - I don't know - spent time listening to all the drummers in that big world and all.

What he actually is, is a many people's favorite rock drummer.

Well, put it this way...
If you polled 100 active, professional Rock/Metal drummers,
I'd be willing to bet that Peart would easily be in the
top-2 as the drummer that has influenced them the most.

Yes. Influence and originality rule. Too many people are awed by speed alone. Peart has some of the most creative fills and patterns I've ever heard. Some of his fills start in unexpected places like on the upbeat and make you shake your head. For example, the fill in "Freewill" during the guitar solo. Just amazing.

Been a drummer all my life, and DC is as good of a rock drummer as you get.

I just don't like the individual sounds of his drums. Seems they lack true pitch definition and melodic sound. Don't know if his Regal tips are too heavy or he's hitting Tupperware, but it just sounds flat & echoey. And that can be a great vibe for certain songs, but like a piano or a guitar, I think drums should sound different for different songs, especially the snare. A snare most often needs a tight crunchy pop that totally separates it from the other drums. With a snare, some decay is good. But with toms, too much sounds like you're trying to create a sound rather than have the drum define it.

But DC himself...yeah, he's a monster. And his playing is only getting better.
The fact that he sings so well too probably makes him one of the most overall talented drummers in the biz.
