Who do you think the best frontman to lead Journey?

Postby RebornJrny » Sat Jun 07, 2008 2:11 am

This will be interesting poll from you Journey fans, ex-Journey fans, naysayers, haters, carpetbaggers, etc....After watching concerts, DVD's, CD's and other YouTube performances from 3 different post-Perry singers, who do you think among the 3 singers, in your honest opinion is the best frontman to lead Journey. I know Euros still hanging to their opinion since Journey has yet to go on tour, but at least you have your opinion too. Here you go.

Arnel has the best voice of the three in this poll. Huge step up from Augeri IMO.

I have to say Jeff. I would have loved to have seen a change in direction and heard a more rocking Journey.

Wow, after 250 lurkers and 22 voters, JSS and Arnel, almost tied.  8) Where are Augeri fans?

If it isn't going to be Steve Perry, then probably Arnel. I actually really liked Steve Augeri, and wonder how he would have done with this current set of songs. Jeff Scott Soto was just too different of a sound and I can understand why Schon and Cain didn't want to continue with him (it's just that they went about it in such a lousy way that is disappointing).

I have Kevin Chalfant's Journey CD and while he sounds good, I was surprised at how amateurish the arrangements and playing is on the tracks. I probably would have been okay with Chalfant as frontman for Journey.

Arnel has a great sound and I am hoping that the band is on the right track now. At least they ditched the "Generations" idea of letting everyone sing. That was horrible!

JSS! Would love to have heard more like this from them........ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOAW6Q75FNw

The guy is electrifying as a frontman! I think he garnered a little too much attention, all is as it should be I guess, Neal's back to being the main draw again.

You guys forget that Soto is a Baritone. Singing the classic stuff would have kicked his ass after a while and maybe sidelined him.. I think he is better off doing his own thing.

I DO agree he is better off doing his own thing now..........can spread his wings. Journey to me is sooooooo much more than just that early period of Perry's high tenor (I actually preferred Perry's more raw emotive vocals from Frontiers, ROR, TBF) and Jeff pulled those eras off great. If your "Journey" preference is more the very early high tenor stuff then ya, you're not going to dig what Jeff brought to the table.

I understand your take on this, like majority of Journey fans you want to hear the legacy sound of Journey , others preferred the rock metallic voice of JSS, but it's with the fans voice preference. The good thing about Arnel is he's so versatile on any song he sings, be a ballad or rocker song, IMO. One of his song I really enjoyed back in Chile concert is the Edge of the Blade. http://youtube.com/watch?v=YVXkfOtL42A
I wish he sang this at PH concert, unfortunately they didn't perform the song.

you mean like Be Good To Yourself and Only the Young? Bootleg recordings of those made my mind up but quick.

One other thing, had I heard Augeri's RAW boots before the tapegate stuff (I hadn't heard any bootlegs of him till here-only the Vegas DVD), I wouldn't have wanted him in the band either, at least live. Journey stuff was too high for him. Augeri always had trouble with the Journey gig, this from a mutual voice coach.

Damn, if only ERIC MARTIN was here!

He is not a baritone, he is more of a mezzo-tenor. A baritone can't sing as high as does Soto.

I was a big Augeri fan and would've been happy to see him continue as lead singer in Journey if he hadn't had the vocal issues. But now, listening to Arnel, Arnel just seems to be a more natural fit. Maybe it's age, but Arnel seems to be able to reach the higher octive with much less strain and he has a soulfulness that Augeri was missing.

So my vote's for Arnel but Augeri's a close second. I appreciate his talents, but I never thought JSS was a good fit.

i really liked steve on the first couple of tours, and im a fan of jeffs, but if soul sirkus was any indicattion of the new journey with him, i would prefer arnel.

 Hey, not everybody can appreciate great emotive vocals.....their loss. Image

I haven't heard JSS do BGTY, but the Only The Young I saw on a Virginia show boot was GREAT! And this performance solidified it for me that he was the next best thing to happen to Journey since Perry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDtHpo3I5vc

My favorite vocals have never been about range, I could care less if somebody can hit Mariah Carey high notes..............for me it's all about the delivery. All 3 of my faves have very different vocal tones, but each have lots of "soul" to spare. I love a vocalist who can slay me with a heartfelt soulful ballad then turn around and belt out a rock scream like nobody's business. :D 2 out of 3 on the 27th, Deb's definitely going to be in her "happy place".

I voted for the guy that makes Journey sound like Journey, is gonna front a top 10 debut album, has sparked worldwide interest and can hit all of the notes. He doesn't dress like a fairy or a gang member either. I'll keep my vote to myself.

Just read your actual question again..............and to tell ya the truth "best frontman" and "to lead Journey" are 2 things I would associate more with JSS than with AP or SA.

True. JSS is the consummate performer. But in terms of musical chemistry, I never felt it between Neal and Jeff. Not on the solo stuff and not on the GH's. He had the right vibrato, which was a step up from the Augeri years, but as in terms of chemistry, just wasn't there.

Still, it's no excuse for the manner in which he was treated. He saved their asses, he deserved better. Neal should pick up the phone and have a heart to heart with him. I think they'd both feel better afterward.

Ya think they haven't talked ever since? Let's ask Jeff to confirm :) :)
