I agree with everything you said except the solo king comments. Although, he has good solo songs and I like his solo stuff, I think Sammy's solo career is a little overblown.

Hagar brought some serious melodic vocal work that allowed the band to reach a different audience, but Roth...even now...he just screams raw, fun, rock and roll on stage. Van Halen w/Roth is STILL the ultimate bar band and always will be!

They really seemed to dive off the cliff with that record. Gary Cherone is a great vocalist, and it's a shame they didn't do something better with his talent. Very dark album.

I prefer Sam Halen too...just personal taste/preference. I like the DLR era, how can one not...but the Sammy albums top the Dave albums for me...

It was always Van Hagar for me. Sammy got me into them. The best ever vocalist brought some maturity to the band (but still maintained the fun-side). Sad that its all over for them.

DLR VH was a unique band that if continued would have been our generations version of the Rolling Stones. There was just something special with them. With Van Hagar, they just became a hard rock version of Journey or REO. Just a bunch of guys singing songs.

Hagar all the way...Van Roth would have popped out in a couple of more years...Don't get me wrong, have all the albums and love all the stuff, but Roth's act would have wore thin - which it did anyways. Hagar brought an element of substance to that band that launched it into a new decade. Do you really think the '90's would have had much use for Roth running around in spandex and grabbing his crotch? It didn't as I recall....

That was because I didn't know shit about Hagar back then, as I do now.

Yes, the DLR era is more, one could say, "unique" due to Dave and Ed.

However, as a pure vocalist, and songwriter (not to mention Sam also plays an instrument, and Dave can only play with himself), I respect Sam far more than Dave. Montrose and many (not all) of Sammy's solo albums are great rock records. Dave's are all jokes. Yes, even the one he did with Vai and Sheehan. I have NO idea why it gets so much praise. In spite of the top-shelf musicians Dave surrounded himself with, Eat 'Em And Smile sounds like a limp-dicked version of VH. And it just got worse after that. Rejoining VH is the best thing that's ever happened to Dave, and I'm sure it's working wonders for his mortgage, his bank accounts, and his credit card balances.

So with me, it's not an age issue. I just know what I like.

But with Van halen, I think you have to look at the band as a whole, and with DLR I think it was just better. I actually enjoy Hagar's solo stuff much more then DLR. The only song of DLR's I like is "Going Crazy". Sammy was a better singer, maybe a better guy etc etc, but DLR with Van Halen just clicked and was special. For some reason Sammy with VH just did not do it for me. I'm not a musician, but I think the reason was his voice was too high (for lack of a better term) and in combo with the high backing vocals and screeching high VH solo's it was too much. I found it irritating after awhile. DLR's low growl sort of balanced everything out.

if you knew anything about dave, you would know he doesnt need money. the guy came from money, made his own money and had no money problems.
