Another Walmart dumbfounded

Found this on Yahoo answers:

Journey Revelation album?
WHat can you say about their new album? Do you think it will reach the billboard top songs? the sales clerk at Walmart asked me "What's going on, everybody is buying this CD!?"

Actually, I'm wondering that myself. Great CD, but how was it promoted? Strictly through Walmart and our cat fights? I think the CBS thing had something to do with it. I sent a friend the video clip of them on CBS. She totally went out and bought it ten minutes later.

Ellen, CBS, Youtube, the Wallyworld ad and word of mouth.

I told a friend who's more into R&B and she picked it up. She's diggin it.

haven't seen the ad. interesting. Yeah, I forgot about Ellen. Your friend is probably sick of the 'R&B' that's out there now...
(How can they call most of it 'R&B'???) Sounding like my parents now...

For a well known group like Journey its simple execution and simple math. Most of the 300 million people in the USA listen to pure shit, however there are 2-3 % who dont. You apply your talents and and create good product like Revelation and market it well enough to reach those six to nine million people, at least 10% of those people are going to appreciate it and buy it. That gets you potential 600,000 in sales right there. It builds from there.

I will say it again..

Perry must be rolling in his litter box about now..

I would have never believed that the album would do this well. They are back in America's face again... If they play it right they can stay awhile. People just love the underdog story of Arnel too. If they hear about him, his life and what he went through to get where he is they are going to buy it on merit alone. When I got my copy Arnel and the boys were up there on all 1000 of the hdtv sets and it was loud enough to hear clearly. There must have been 20-30 people that were standing there watching intently... Chemistry that moves the masses strikes rarely. It may be striking again....


Good for Journey.

I think the "Ellen" show had a lot to do with it. First she mentions it, shows excitement and shows a clip, invites them...then when they played on the show people got to hear it for themselves...then, she says, "you can get the new CD by logging onto theellenshow.com". & people were probably amazed at how much the new singer sounds like SP.
I'm sure AP brought a lot of his own fans in, too.

To quote screenwriter William Goldman when it comes to matters of what makes a success a success: "Nobody knows anything."
The Napster leak notwithstanding, "Arrival" got alot more PR than "Revelation" did.
I really chalk it up to the 80's friendly zeitgeist and Walmart prominently displaying the album in stores.

I think part of the reason is two-fold.... Arrival had it's share of publicity, but didn't have the one monster radio single that says "Journey is back". Higher Place never had a chance and All the Way was just tepid--kinda watered-down Journey, which isn't going to sell albums. Add to it, the climate wasn't as conducive to a Journey release...and then there is the no-Perry problem, which didn't help.

Now, it's several years down the road, and Journey has been out of sight, out of mind for a while. The climate towards 80s music has slowly been changing back in favor, and the Sopranos made Journey cool again. Arnel's youtube success story is the underdog saga that everyone loves, and the guy can sing. Perry's been out of the limelight for a while, so you aren't competing directly against him, and people are more willing to accept someone else singing Journey. Add to it, After All These Years is a monster hit just waiting to explode given a chance that just screams "Journey" when you hear it. Add publicity from WalMart to a core audience that likes Journey and you might just sell a few albums.

In the end, it's all timing, quality and publicity. Get all those things together, and you have a chance.

I agree 100%. Everybody is going for the nostalgia recently (look the movies for instance....Indiana Jones anyone?) That's part of it, but certainly selling what, in some respects, is a box set for the price of one CD will drive sales up. Not to mention that I just have this feeling a lot of people are buying it because of the Greatest Hits disc. I would really like to know how many people who bought this thing knew, before hand, that the GHs CD was a remake? I don't believe everybody pays attention to stuff like that. They see a greatest hits package and 11 new songs and think "That's a pretty good deal."

I'm just wondering how a new Journey Cd, with this line up, and without this type of marketing would hold up?
