But not all of Journey's die-hard fans — and there are plenty — have embraced Pineda with open arms. When Siobhan Tobin started an Arnel Pineda fan site in December, the Florida-based web developer says angry Journey fans left death threats on her answering machine. The band's traditional fanbase is mostly white and American, and some are upset that Pineda is neither. "Journey is supposed to be an all-American band," one fan wrote in an online forum.

I'm privy to some of these tales...disturbing to say the least. Alcohol+psychosis+sour grapes=juvenile phone pranks.

I'm not doubting the fact that some journey fans can get psychotic...but this is laughable, to say the least.

The "death threats" seem perfectly in line with youtube stalking, incessant photoshopping, constant fascination, and disturbing daily imagery. While I won't back it as fact, it is easily conceivable.

J, mega props on the fantastic tune that is Never Walk Away. Didn't Neal say that has (desevedly) charted as well?

Oh come on Dan, you know the person they quoted is an internet weirdo with multiple personalities that actually disrupted the hell out of this site about a year ago...You want to make the leap from photoshopping to death threats? Can't see how that is an easy leap to make. On the other hand, someone who would PM me under different user names playing one off of the other in some odd soap opera drama does seem capable of making up fake death threats. Nice drama to create, especially in a nationally respected weekly magazine. Don't give that person any credibility.

"Internet weirdo" aside, I can totally see the "jump" being made from photoshopping to phone calls. In fact, it was made. I received, via messenger rather than phone call, the exact same sort of threats. Of course I doubled over with laughter at the mere visual, but that doesn't mean others didn't find this alarming. And yes, it was alcohol induced, but I'm assuming these calls were as well. Phones and computers are great means of protection for psychotic people.

But the thousands of people reading Time magazine don't know this and that's the problem.

Agreed. The reporter should have followed up more on the point, but it appears they were more focused on sensationalism, rather than fact. Who would have thought.

So you also received death threats?

I agree & I don't get why folks seem so astonished that Time reported it. People say unreal things in this forum on a regular basis, like the guy who posted a wish for "two tiny coffins" for Deano and Lula's twins in the congratulations thread right after they were born.
