He is *NOT* comparable to SRV and EC....and when he tries to hang with players like above mentioned players, or Albert King....he gets his lunch handed to him.
It's not opinion here SF-Dano. It's fact. You either haven't looked at the video I posted or are chosing to ignore the extremely incriminating evidence. It is you, who is allowing personal bias to get in the way.
Lets be honest here...he doesn't belong in the blues/bluesrock realm any more than EC or SRV belongs in the MR/AOR/Hard Rock realm.
Sorry...It's nothing to do with my feelings on Neal Schon as a dispicable human being with zero morals or ethics. It has everything to do with my opinion on his guitar playing...something I studied in depth for well over 20 years. He's a gifted rock guitarist....but he is NOT a gifted blues guitarist.
Moving on, now that the bullshit has been dealt with....Neals playing on Revelations has dropped several notches. I blame it on his overuse and over reliance on those damn fernandes sustainers. The same thing happened to EVH. Those things are a crutch when you use them to the effect that Neal and EVH have used them. Both players have suffered technically as a result. Listen to the redone solo on FITH on revelations. Then listen to the Generations version....disregarding your opinion of which version is better, and simply listening to the technical execution of the solo.....the revelation one, pales in comparison. Technically, it's executed poorly, in comparison to the original.
I really think his playing is actually going up, it's just the way he's using his chops nowadays + his tone doesn't come off on tape nearly as well as it does live. I actually really like when Neal shreds - it's more of a raw "rock" shredding rather than the super technical playing of guys like Petrucci and Satch (not that they aren't great, Neal's is just different). Neal obviously isn't in their league technically, but I definitely don't think he's getting WORSE. I don't hear anything technically wrong with the FITH solo on Revelations, I just hate how he whammys into the G# that starts the solo (is it G# on Revelations? Pretty sure it is on Gens.. don't have a guitar up here to check atm) on Revs and all the other gay sounding effects. I don't think that's a sign of chops going down tho.
Also, I think Neal is a lot more schooled in blues/blues-rock than you think. I don't think Santana would have invited him if Neal wasn't an established blues/fusion player. Would I rather hear SRV do the blues over Neal? Of course but... anyway, I don't think Neal's as clueless on blues as you think...
That video was pretty bad on Neal's part but let's face it we all have off nights. And who knows, Neal was probably bombed here. I've heard him and seen him demo some real nice blues stuff on videos and guitar mag cds and stuff. the other guys didn't sound too hot either. Probably some bad monitors and/or stage mix. But anyway, would you consider stuff like Big Moon and I'll Be Alright Without You to be "melodic rock" solos or something closer to blues? Just food for thought..
