Saint John wrote:These Meet and Greets are completely fucking bogus. They should be limited to far fewer people and there should be an absolutely "No Touching" rule that is strictly enforced. Mauling and fawning all over people is unacceptable. Journey's security sucks and should be reconsidered immediately. Toomey should be in charge of keeping people away from Arnel. He's probably the only guy with the balls to heave people out of the Meet and Greet if they touch him. They should use the fact that the guy is a prick to their advantage for once. I would cut out Meet and Greets immediately. I'm sure they could find another way to make up the income. They're giving fans far too much access and it's got to be overbearing, invasive, annoying and repetitive to a guy that just wants to sing and take care of his voice. I now see why Perry ducked out of these things. Good for him.

I don't believe it's cultural. I believe it's evolutionary. If the Philippines had the rock-n-roll history that America does, then I'm sure their fans would have evolved/matured. Think about the way we mobbed Elvis & The Beatles 40 yrs ago, not to mention every big country & pop star throughout last century. If there were as many 'rock stars' in the Philippines, all the money associated with it, the huge entertainment industry, and all the life-long careers on the line, then I'm sure they'd required meet & greets to be more guarded. But there are no real icons over there. They're not larger-than-life international stars, they're basically just local celebrities. Mobbing a celebrity isn't culture, it's just a form of early childhood development.

I’m not an expert on evolution as you are. But I believe insinuating that people in the Philippines are 40 years behind in the music evolution timeline is a product of an overstretched imagination of some sort—and I can say that right off the bat---even without consulting first with my Filipino friends on what they think.
BTW, I’m not sure where you got your seemingly mixed up “expert” opinion, but my reliable professional source said that childhood development is dependent on culture! It's cultural!!! contrary to your belief!![]()

I believe his point was, if the Philippines had more international superstars, the mentality would be different, Local celebrities can handle the occasional mobs, but when you become an international commodity worth millions of dollars to your investors, obviously your well being becomes of paramount importance from the business stand point that you are now an asset that must be protected so as not to be come damaged goods and devalued. I believe Lea Salonga handles her meet and greets a little differently since she won a Tony award, compared to some of the other local stars who haven't really tasted success beyond the Pacific rim besides playing a few venues in Vegas or L.A. to predominately Filipino and Asian audiences.

So very true. I witnessed it first hand. When they were touring, the band would register in hotels under assumed names but fans would still find them. I remember one time Cyndy and I were in Texas in 1986 doing an interview with Steve for Journey Force. We couldn't get the interview done at the venue so went back to the hotel after the show. Girls were calling his room so much he had to have the switch board operator shut down the phone. Girls were knocking on his door and trying to turn the door knob. I've seen people grab him, hug him, try and kiss him, touch his hair - all totally inappropriate...

Me and L from Burbank were so shocked when we met him, we actually started backing up when he approached.

If he hadn't reached out for the hugs I would never have even dreamed of invading his personal space for one. I have to laugh at Cyndy and I a few weeks ago, we were both being so damn shy and polite about invading Jeff's space, we actually had to drag each other over for pictures. What was up with that?

When you wrote "I'm sure" twice in your piece---I thought that's pretty firm and authoritative...definitely not speculation. At any rate, no harm done...p-e-a-c-e!![]()

We should talk some time. I'll tell you about Subic Bay...and you can tell me about the vast Filipino community in NW Arkansas.

I did witness him get mobbed leaving the Milwaukee venue during the FTOLSM tour. That was scary. They were grabbing him and everything.
