Mansfield, MA Report

Postby JrnyScarab » Thu Aug 21, 2008 12:26 am

Sorry for the brief overview, but I'm at work and working on 3.5 hours sleep. Cheap Trick opened and performed a nice set of mostly well known songs. Rick Nielsen's guitar collection was really cool and the band played well with Robin Zander hitting most of the notes. Sound mix was not the greatest but that is to be expected when 3 bands play and the first & second band don't get full use of the sound system.

Now to Heart. WOW!! What can I say that hasn't been said. Ann Wilson absolutely tore the place apart with her incredible vocals. Her voice still sounds like it did in the 80's. Nancy sang lead as well, and though she sang fine, you can tell the tone of her voice has changed. Not so with Ann. At first the guitar was too loud and Ann wasn't loud enough. That was quickly remedied by the second song. Pretty much the same setlist that everyone else has been reporting. All in all, a great performance that primed the crowd for Journey.

Next up Journey. The PA system started playing Back in Black by AC/DC and toward the end of the song, the video screen turned on with the members of Journey backstage in the hallway getting ready to come out. Ross was making funny faces at the camera and Deen was playing air drums to Back in Black. He has changed his look and kinda of has a Tommy Lee look to him. The band started walking down the hall to the stage and the place erupted. The final strains of Back in Black faded as Neal's guitar intro led into Majestic and then into the first song Never Walk Away. From the opening strains you could tell Arnel was going to have a good night and indeed he did. It appears he has maintained some nice consistancy on this tour which bodes well for the future.

The setlist was pretty much the dirty dozen with Change For The Better and After All These Years being the other new ones played. They also played La Do Da which pleased me immensly. Did a great job on that one too! Arnel killed on Faithfully and AATY. They ended with Any Way You Want It instead of LTS which was fine with me. I'm kind of sick of LTS to be honest with you.

About the only complaint I had was that Arnel's voice was kind of muffled sounding for most of the show. It sounded like the low end bass part of his voice had too much EQ which made the midrange part of his voice sound muffled. Also, when he hit the high notes it seemed as thought the PA system was distorting a bit. Maybe he needs to back off the mic a bit when hitting those.

I know I didn't mention the rest of the band, but they were their old reliable selves. Neal, Jon, Ross, and Deen played and sang great and seemed to be having a great time with Jon really seeming into it. Seems to like playing lots of guitar as well.

Time to get back to work. I'm sure their is more I can add but it's all been said before. Was a very enjoyable night!

Thanks for adding your review here JrnyScarab, good to see that you enjoyed the show.
I don't think I recall seeing this in the set list for Heart but I'll ask on chance that it made it in anyway.....
Did they do Soul Of The Sea?

Sorry, but they didn't do Soul of The Sea. I love that song though and just about anything off Dreamboat Annie would be fine in my book!

Hey MG we do have something we have in common. ;-) ANN is amazing, NANCY kicks ass on guitar. Love HEARTS MUSIC!!
You know what would be cool here... a NANCY and NEAL guitar showdown on stage... that would kick.

I believe they have. I think there is a live DVD out of them doing the entire Dreamboat Annie CD.

You know, I just cannot seem to get over how good Ann was! That was one of the best performances I have ever seen, period. Heart Killed. AP was excellent for sure, but Heart was beyond excellent.

I was more excited about Heart because I've seen Journey so many times. Even with a new singer, the Journey hits are getting stale (just because I've seen them so much). I REALLY enjoyed hearing the new Journey stuff.

I have to be honest about Heart. I'm not a big fan of their guitar player. He gets the job done but he's no better than many cover band guitarists I've heard. He is pretty sloppy at times, messing up the simplest parts. Most people won't notice but I play guitar and my ears hone in on it. Other than that, I thought as a band Heart was fantastic.

By the way, they also did Dead or Alive last night. It also sounded great! Turn down the world NEEDS to be played. The wife and I were listening to it on the way to the show and I was getting goosebumps and my eyes started watering (OK, call me a wimp). I mentioned to my wife how the song got to me and she said "I REALLY like that song".
