OT: Styx, ASIA, LittleRiver and Doobies at RibFest!!!

Postby LyricalLady » Tue Sep 23, 2008 8:41 am

RibFest is an annual event in St.Pete FL in Vinoy Park on the bay. Last year's excitment for me was Eddie Money and Gregg Rolie. This years line-up has me already packing....

Friday night - STYX

Saturday has a fine day line up of several good country rock bands and closes with the Doobie Brothers!!!

Sunday is gonna be a total funfest for me....Little River Band and ASIA!

Not to mention...the ocean, beer, and RIBS.....RIBS.....and RIBS!!!!!

I only went on Sunday Last year...but I'm hittin all three days on this one!!!!!

Here is a link if anyone is interested. It's in NOV this year so weather should be warm in the day and cool in the evening with the breeze off the ocean.

I had way to much fun last year...WAY to much!!! IS IT NOVEMBER YET!!!!!!

That is so cool! St. Pete is a beautiful city and you're there at a beautiful time of year.

Little River Band is special to me, not only for their music; but their keyboard player, Chris Marion, is a friend and neighbor of ours...great guy. Be sure and tell him Bonnie says hello and I wish I could be there.

The original Asia is not performing, it must be Asia with John Payne.

The current Littler River Band is awesome if you can put aside the politics/pissing match of the Birtles/Shorrock/Goeble vs Housden/Nelson camps. They are VERY smooth live and very professional and even do some great re-arrangements of the old classics. Not to mention their new material is very good - Test of Time and Where We Started from are both outstanding CDs. Enjoy them!

It's gonna be a great time....my daughter lives in Clearwater so staying with her. She's been to this thing like 8 times...so she and her BF will get there at gate open and run our stuff up for a good spot up front. We had good seats last year....but I want up closer. If anyone is thinking on going would love to say HI.

Can not even express the greens of envy I am right now.
Love all these bands! (yes even the not so original LRB line-up)
Any photos or review would be grand if you are able to offer em up.
Get a Pelican in a shot and you'll be on my good list forever!

I have no trouble with bands carrying on with different members...but the LRB is the one exception.

The Doobies still deliver the goods BIG time.

Have you listened to their recent albums? Great stuff. Enjoy BSG for what it is (as well as Goeble's solo albums - the last two were fabulous) and the Full Circle DVD is incredible. But I really like the current LRB's output/live show as well - the music is bigger than the band members for me 99% of the time.

Honestly, one of the few things I wouldn't see is Journey without Neal and probably Rush without the original three. Can't think of too many bands where I wouldn't at least give another line-up a chance.

You gotta check out the studio albums... Test of Time is fantastic, Where We Started From is very good, and the Rearranged CD has some cool rearrangements of LRB classics (and a few from the two albums mentioned here). Test of Time has a pretty strong melodic rock feel to me... much more so than most of the old LRB output. I think you'd like it.

Original LRB was my first concert ever, at age 6. My dad took me to see them and Seals and Crofts on a double billing. That's what really got me into music. So LRB has quite a special place in my heart as well 8)

I still think you should give Test of Time a chance. Pretend it's another band with great vocal harmonies. You just might like it. To each his own though...

I feel the same way about em Tom but are you saying that you wouldn't go see
a stellar show like this because of their line up?
If so, cool beans.....just curious Sir.

I know that my money won't be buying LRB music but I would lay some greens down
to see a show they were in with others I enjoyed.
Yup BSG is where I shell out for cd's.

Being from a land locked area, I can't figure out why anyone would go to the sea side to eat fuckin ribs. Gimme some fish or lobster, some cracked crab or clam chowder. I can get ribs all day long here.

I concur with that. If it was one member or two, but it's the 3 founders that sang and wrote 95% of the hit songs. After seeing clips of the LRB with their current line up, I'll stick with BSG.

I kinda feel bad for John Payne, he got the shit end of the stick when the reunion happened, but I also think it's kind of lame to bill yourself as "Asia feat. John Payne" knowing full well it's just going to be listed as "Asia" by most of the venue/festival people who end up booking you. I do like a lot of the music Asia did in the 90's though, I'd totally go see them if they played in my town.

There are going to be a lot of pissed off Asia fans when they find out the "faux" Asia is playing and not the Original lineup..

Yeah, it'd be kind of like Augeri going out by himself and billing himself as 'Journey.'

It'll still be a good set though...the guys in 'faux' Asia are great musicians.

They could be great musicians, but the Asia of the 90's was nothing like the Asia of the 80s. Plus if they stick to the Payne Asia, nobody's going to be into them.. Other then Aqua, did they even have other US releases?
