Question for my brother/sister MR'ers

Postby epresley » Tue Oct 14, 2008 5:33 am

What do y'all think continues to motivate Journey to tour and/or release new music? The have made millions over the years, so undoubtedly, they don't need the money, but maybe still LIKE making more. Is it the enjoyment of "the road"? Is it a need to still create music? Does Steve Perry not have those same needs? Even still, after Journey having such a successful tour, I can understand it a lot more than say, Kansas, Styx, BOC, Molly Hatchet, etc. that are playing to a fraction of the audiences they once were, but keep on touring. Loverboy played here in San Angelo, Texas and drew 250 people. You would think that would hardly be worth the drive out to West Texas!!!!!!!!!!!

Just curious--
It's not a lie, if you believe it..........

Well, being a collegiate athlete in the last year of my career and having been a national junior athlete my whole life, I can probably tell you at least part of it boils down to they just flat out love doing it. I'm gonna be so bummed after my college season ends in the spring, because that's pretty much the end of my athletic career at a high level for the rest of my life. If I had the chance to do it at that level til I died, you bet I would.

It breaks the mundanity of playing the same twelve songs again and again.
I also think Neal and Cain, if not as a unit, are always writing individually.
I am just glad they still are writing.
Remember, after Arrival flopped, Cain considered only releasing EPs from then on.

I think Neal is still looking be recognized in the same light as his peers ( Clapton, Beck and so on) by the public. I think those in the industry itself already give him accolades. When most people think of Journey, they think of Perry before Schon. I just don't see him ever getting there, sorry to say. Cain just likes to perform and the attention I think. It's a steady job for the rest of them.

Making millions and saving millions are two different things. I'm sure Neal and Jon can live comfortably, but they both have been through divorces, and have spent a ton of their own money to keep the Journey name alive. I do not think NS lives a simple life like SP does. His guitar tech says he is constantly buying the latest and greatest new equipment. Not to mention houses, multiple cars, motorcycles, etc. Not saying they are just doing this for the money, because I know NS loves to tour constantly. Just don't think the money that they made in the 80's/90's is as easy to come by these days.

What a stupid fuckin' post. Neal has more than enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his days. Try that the dude loves what he does and the road is the only place he knows.

exactly. why retire? what's he gonna do? teach Jr. high guitar lessons?? play the nursing home circuit?? he's not NEARLY ready for that. 50ers have a good 30 years ahead of them--what have you done in 30 years? a LOT!!! that's a freakin long time.

plug him in, prop him up on stage til he's dead and prop us up in the audience til we're dead. pretty simple, really.

please save the cracks about his personal finances and obligations--that's not nice. and not our business. and we REALLY don't know him well enough to know his situation. shhh

hehe

Neal says in the GP interview that motorcycles have damaged his hearing more than the music. and that SPs amps were really loud. he says he wears ear protection, in the form of in ear monitors, on stage now and protection when he rides.

so does that mean we have to now when we go hear him?? i have pink ear plugs. :?

nah...............

actually, it is much louder on the lawn than it is in the front row. I've heard anyway--never actually been in the back. Ken, can you help us with that???

Good post. I'll tell you what, though. You will find something to replace that "high level" of competitiveness if you look hard enough. After college I thought my sports days were done too. I had played organized baseball forever and now it was gone. However, I started playying 12 inch softball and it rekindled my interest almost immediately. Look hard enough, you'll find it.

As this specifically relates to Neal; I played 4 games of softball yesterday and I could hardly fucking move afterward. Had this been at my job I would have been cussing in my sleep last night...but it wan't. It was the result of doing something I love and wouldn't trade those aches and pains for anything, and I doubt Neal would either.

Rhi, your sig is one of my favorite words of wisdom ever. it's timeless. There's a song back in the days with someone narrating it and the chorus goes "you are a child of the universe".

oh by the way, just to keep on topic, living the dream's only limitation maybe, just maybe, something physical.

Neal says he still wants to be playing like B.B. King, into his eighties. The guy is driven. He said in an interview he could retire if he wanted to financially. Of course, that interview might have been before his last divorce.
