Amazing to me that ANY parent thinks it's a good idea for an 8 year old child to be handling an UZI. You would think that his dad, of all people (who is an ER Doctor) would have enough sense not to sanction such a foolish and irresponsible activity!

That was too much gun for him at that age. You got to practice gun safety first.

I have been handling and firing firearms since I was aged 6. While a tragedy, it could have happened to anyone. An Uzi doesn't have that much recoil because of how it is designed.

I suspected someone would attempt to put a spin on this. Sorry Stu...no spin works here. An innocent little boy is now dead, because his parents failed to protect him. While I do realize that anything can happen to any child, it is our job as parents to make intelligent decisions to keep our children safe. Children don't have the cognitive tools in their head to make well informed decisions for themselves. In my opinion, this is beyond reckless, regardless of what proponents of everyone in the country having access to guns will have you believe! Guns don't belong in the hands of little children, period, end of story!

Having hunted as a teen, I can say training someone to handle fire arms, when they're in grade school is pushing it, but a frickin' Uzi? I've seen adults have a hard enough time firing an AR-15 or M-16. The problem isn't the kick, which is fairly nonexistent anyway, but the barrel always tends to rise on auto regardless of the weapon, The instructor, not bracing the boy's hand to keep the gun from elevating, is equally culpable for what happened.

I was also taught to use firearms from a young age, and my Dad had the same rule he had with guns that he had with sail-boats - somethings you can't do yet, not because I don't think you are responsible enough, or skilled enough, but you just aren't damn big enough yet. Don't have the body mass to safely balance the catamaran when the wind picks up, then you aren't sailing without me on the ride-line. Don't have the upper body strength to hold the rifle steady for five minutes? Then you can't load it, let alone fire it unless I'm holding it too. I was 7 when Dad started teaching me to handle a rifle but it wasn't until I was twelve before I had enough body mass to convince him I could handle the recoil and let me shoot without him physically helping me. And that included shooting from the ground.

No WAY would I let a teenager, let alone a child, pick up an Uzi, not without some concrete evidence they knew a hell of a lot more than the basics of firearms handling. If the law requires a qualified instructor to be monitoring the kid, what the hell was the kid's Dad doing helping him? Shouldn't have happened - and I personally really don't like the idea of trying out firearms being sold as a fun family day out. Fucking HUGE responsibility, with enormous repercussions if it goes wrong, not something to put on par with rollercoaster rides and fairy floss.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

Geez this story has me mad!

You have to be 18 to buy certain guns and 21 to buy others so
why is an 8 year old baby playing with a gun at a gun show crowded with people?!!!
I hope they investigate this to infinity to see why and what really happened! If
you take your kid to a bar can you let them drink and smoke cigarrettes=no!
The father of this child is an idiot!

Unfortunately, in the state of Massachusetts, a child that young is allowed to use a gun, so long as the moronic parents approve. I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER allow my son anywhere near a gun. If I have my way, he won't even be near a gun when he's 35! I agree with you that this father, and anyone who actually condones this is a fucking dope! There is simply ZERO justification for a little boy playing with anything, other than a water gun!

Just too young........they cannot at that age comprehend the full danger involved. If it can happen to an adult, it can happen to a young child. You must ask yourself, if the result was the same and it was your child, would you be so willing to say Oh well, it is a fluke? Your child is still dead. Accidents can happen with any firearm. You have to ask yourself, am I willing to take such a risk with my child? :(

You don't need fucking sub-machineguns to kill fucking deer.

It's ridiculous. People have the right to own GUNS, not weapons that could wipe out half a battalion in 30 seconds.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

Don't deny it. You've got a right to own a pool - and a responsibility to make sure your kids know how to swim, or keep them away from the pool until they do. You've got a right to own a car and a responsibility to drive it safely and sober. You may have a right to bear arms (and I believe the situation of that particular part of your constitution was to allow the citizens to form a militia in defence of the country, no?) but I'd like to hear a few more people shouting about being responsible with them. Letting a child play with an Uzi at a public fete is not responsible.

I probably would not let my kid (I don't have one) shoot an uzi or any gun until he's old enough to physical handle it.

Shame an innocent boy died instead of the stupid father who puts an assault rifle in the hands of a 8 year old for fun!

What ER room does he work at?
I hope he's better with knives!

Arianddu,
I agree, it is not a question of rights, but responsibility and common sense. A lot of people lack common sense when it comes to raising children. It is too late for the little boy, and the father now has to live with the choice he made. Unfortunately, the child is the victom of his father's lack of common sense.

Great line  He works at an ER somewhere in CT. The sad thing is that I saw this moron on the local news, and he was fairly nonchalant about the loss of his son. He basically said "Accidents happen". I really found it appalling. As the dad of a little boy, I could NEVER be remotely composed enough to talk to the media about my son who was just killed, because of my gross negligence! People like this shouldn't be allowed to reproduce, as it pollutes the gene pool!
