The article says that other musicians were polled of their top 20 picks and the results were tabulated by an accounting firm, but it doesn't specify how many people were polled or if only other well known musicians were polled.... I guess that will be spelled out in the article when the issue comes out.

Saint John- Not sure where you're getting your 'vision' of Lennon. He was on heroin for a very short time (less than a year), he was on acid for a very short time (2 years). Pretty mild compared to some rock stars. Lennon WAS a great singer. Personally, I think McCartney was technically better, but RollingStone never gives him credit.

Yes, Aretha ahead of Elvis. Elvis was a great singer but didn't hold a candle to Franklin or Cooke.

I think it said that McCartney came in as 11th. The total list has a hundred so it will be interesting to see the rest when it comes out....although I tend to think polls are arbitrary and the arts are all subjective...it still is interesting to see who other artists admire the most.

Good point. Rolling Stone magazine sucks for the most part. I like reading stories in there, but they are constantly and consistently wrong about stuff like this, and as Rick said, it's all because they don't want to be labeled.

The only one of those listed who should even be on there is Elvis. He brought the genre into the mainstream and meshed it with blues and country. The rest are soul singers with the exceptions of Dylan and Lennon, and while they were great writers, they were by no means great singers. As for Aretha, I think she's great and lucky to have had the career longevity she's been blessed with, but she needs to get her ego in check. She is NOT the greatest soul singer ever, as there are too many good ones to count. These 'lists', especially ones in Rolling Stone are good for a laugh, if nothing else.
