The decision to do this is as fucking dumb as waiting for that big beaked asshole to tour for over 20 years!!!
Bullshit.
Deen can't play consistantly without a metronome. Anything Journey does with additional backing tracks is just icing on the cake. The only reason this was dropped with JSS was because there was an attempt to lower songs by a couple keys to accomodate his voice, and there was no BGV in key. Even then, Deen still played with a metronome.

To correct you here, it was their idea to drop down a half step when we started the European tour because the schedule was quite hairy. I didn't want it but was willing to try. We did ONE show tuned down & I hated it, actually found it more difficult to sing as the keys lowered forced me to sing with more of my 'full' voice where as singing in the regular tuning allowed me to use more 'head' voice (for those of you playing the home game, the head voice is a cross between real & falsetto, sounds strong yet saves you from having to belt out until you croak!) & actually saved my voice night after night. Eventually we all tire & need proper vocal rest but this tuning down thing wasn't for me.
Continue on with your topic now....yes, i still linger here from time to time.

Regardless, there were no backing tracks on that show, right?

If it makes you happy, TSO use NO click tracks

An orchestra is very choreographed/set in stone. Plus, even still, there is still at least the human element with a conductor keeping time as opposed to a machine/computer.

Too bad the guys can't all sing like they used to, they wouldn't need the friking canned vox and click shit. It's all so robotic when the band plays to a click track. Journey scrapes by with it because let's face it, you're really paying attention to 2 people in that band for the most part, lead vocalist and lead guitar. Sure Deen, Jon and Ross rock... but it's really a 2 man show.
I love it when Rush plays a few tunes without the click tracks, they really loosen up and jam. Complete with missed notes, dropped sticks, fucked up bass runs, but it's all so dynanic and live, it's worth it. 2112 is one of the tunes where they just cut loose and have fun with it.Same with YYZ. Geddy's face is priceless when he frucks up those solos.
Texafana....This is where I call you out for all those vibrato comments......Most "good" drummers LOVE click tracks. I love you anyways, you sexless little editorialist,

It's when they take advantage of that same technology, and the fans, that things go south...

I could care less if there's a click track or some midget backstage
banging a cowbell to a metronome to keep time...
If the music sounds good and a click helps in that matter, big deal![]()
But TSO going w/o a click... that show is incredible.
You just need to get them to squeeze in more time for you![]()

Yup... a lot of bands use that stuff... especially when they're doing a song that have certain effects that a guitar, bass, and drums can't replicate. It's when they take advantage of that same technology, and the fans, that things go south...
Too much of a good thing is seldom a good thing.

The comment I made was referring more to no backing tracks, more than the fact that we're not using click tracks....you need a click track to keep the backing tracks in time with the band.

I'm wondering if any bands have toyed with the idea of having a roadie/tech trigger stuff like backing vocals in real-time to do away with clicks? I can't possibly imagine how tough it is to stick to a click live with all the adrenaline/nerves etc.
Kinda how a few guitarists out there will have their techs control their pedalboard or even just their wah from off stage...
