What is the deal with Essential vol 3?

Postby Toph » Wed Nov 26, 2008 2:30 am

I saw a Journey essential with a 3rd bonus CD that featured some songs that should have been on the original (Suzanne, Feeling That Way, Walks Like A Lady), what is the story behind this?

Does the third bonus have Why Can't This Night Go On Forever? Because that's definitely one song that should have been on the orginal Essential Journey. I can't believe it was left off and a couple other ones were on instead.

Story is: Sony loves to release classic material whenever Journey is releasing new material....

Said this before. It is NOT just Journey.
You'll see that happen when there is current activity with other Legacy artists.
I've been observing. That's just what they do. Makes perfect business sense.

The new Essential continues the trend of headscratching musical choices established by "Baby I'm a Leavin You" on the first go-around.
"When I Think of You" and "I Can See it in your Eyes" are fine songs, but essential?
Not hardly.

I hear what BJG is sayin, but Sony has showed deference to Perry in the past.
His direct input would help explain some of the batty creative choices going on here.

Perry, or someone vicarious wannabe spokesperson, promised a new album by end of 2008. This is it.

On what grounds?
It wasn't released a single, it's not a concert fav...
Aside from the song's inspiration being Perry's dead mother, the song has very little significance historically or retrospectively.
Just because you like a song doesn't make it essential.
I'd argue even the unkown "Higher Place" marks more of a turning point in the band's overall legacy.

It was an unreleased song from the TBF recording sessions.

A half-ass song that didn't make it on to TBF. I believe it was the Japanese bonus song. For me, more than anything, it showcases Perrry's voice being blown out. He tries to show power at times and it's completely empty. I think that's why the album was ballad heavy.

Disagree. Worst Journey song ever. Yes even worse than Backtalk. Love numbers 7 and 12 though. :o

Wow Deb. I might be your long lost daughter. (if not, can I be?) You even dislike the same J songs I do. LMAO. And its not many J songs at all that I actually dislike. "Can Do" makes me... well, kinda cringe a little... so does Blech Talk.

Every album, it seems, has some pretty weak songs on it. I know they try to put the best tracks on the album so it makes me wonder how bad some of the other stuff that gets left off is.

I think these releases are Sony's way of telling Steve “Look, we'll keep the royalties coming but if you ever try to peddle off some thing like “Against the wall” again, it will be “Asta la vista baby”.”

natural thing was left off departure and even though its an outtake i'd pretty much choose it over anything else on that album except maybe people and places.

"Back Talk" made it to Frontiers while "Liberty" and "Ask the Lonely" didn't...

Agreed! HATE the lyrics of that song! Sheesh, slap me in the face and tell me to belt up while you're at it, why don't you!
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

I understand holding a couple of good tracks for soundtrack albums, etc. if you are in your prime and think you can keep momentum going between albums by taking that route. At the time of Frontiers, it would have made sense to take that approach.

Not to mention one of Neal's best solos ever.
Turn it up before the fade out and listen to him play like a man possessed.

Alright, that's it. Prepare to be vanquished.

This post, more than anything, showcases that you, in fact, suck.  That's a great song, vocal blowout or not and Steve Smith MAKES that song. You hurt my feelings, now take that back.
