Joe is suing Coldplay as he claims they have ripped off a track of his called If I could Fly - on first listen - it sounds blatant to me - i hope you get millions off them Joe!

Interesting. I'm a Satch fan but I haven't heard that track. I'll have to check it out. It wouldn't surprise me, since this Coldplay track is the only one I've heard that I actually like. Would make sense if they didn't come up with it

Cheers man!

Damn, it sure sounds suspicious. VERY suspicious. I think it's going to be a tough case for Satch. It's a guitar melody, not a vocal melody. On top of that, any case of music plagiarism of this nature is tough to prove because of the conventions of Western music/harmony - it's not inconceivable for them to write identical melodies over a given progression. On top of that, things like unconscious influence/lifting of a song you like can easily happen in the writing process.

I'm sure any of us who have taken a stab at songwriting here know that. So many neat little riffs I've had to toss once I realize they aren't mine :(

I'm a Coldplay fan. I believe he probably heard it and did not remember he did and the melody stayed with him in his subconscious. He's not the type to blatantly and knowingly rip off someone else. He's too arrogant and too much of an artist to do that.

So were Jimmy Page and Robert Plant but they stole very blatantly from - lots of black bluesmen and even Jeff Beck.

Everybody steals to some small degree tho. Look at the guitarists that came after Eddie Van Halen - so blatant they nearly destroyed that scene as there was no originality amongst them - even tho the technical ability was good.

No mistaking the similar sound there. I like Coldplay & have their other 3 CDs but not this one...wonder what's gonna happen...how do they prove anything? I've always wondered about this...how does a musician know if they heard some melody/chords somewhere other than in their head. The subconscious holds onto things.
George Harrison was sued by a popular group for a song they said he plagiarized. He was so angry that he forbid everyone to have the radio on anywhere in the house or car when he was writing music.

Y'know this is the 2nd time I've read that Coldplay cribbed "Vida" from a song that came before it.

However - the 1st song was a regular pop tune, from 07, but it "sounds" a lot older.
I heard it on a radio Morning Show about 2 months ago.

There's only so many chord progressions out there, but... dat's eerie, mon.

Coldplay should just make nice and settle with Satriani out of court,
bundling/discounting it with a deal to remix the two tracks together,
and Satch takes lion's share of revenue from it; plus they offer to
bring Satch in as a paid guest on their next album, if he'll deign to.

Both tracks suck major ass, but Satriani is Satriani, so he gets a pass.

I love Coldplay but Viva La Vida is a stupid song.

However, I don't think they would knowingly plagiarize someone like him for a lead single. The obscure NYC band, maybe. Not Satriani.

And it took him THIS LONG to bring out a suit? The song came out like a year ago...

VANILLA ICE "Ice Ice Baby" and QUEENs "Under Pressure" in which Vanilla Ice made a settlement for an undisclosed amount.

I actually like the Aldo Nova album and was a huge Jeff Starship fan and I can honestly say I never put these two songs together until now. Pretty weird. At least Aldo Nova changed it up into a separate song, compared to the Coldplay BS.
