They really need to work on this duet before they take it Stateside, because it is not well
done. The song choice isn't really the problem. I clicked on some other YouTube links to get a
sense of Lani on other songs - she has a beautiful voice that sounds operatic when she's
simply singing notes, not words. But it's all power and no subtlety or interpretation, almost
as if the meaning of the words is irrelevant.
When they sing together, it's like two separate performances happening onstage at the same
time. Arnel is in his groove, doing his lead performance and she kicks in like she's trying to
wake him up or blow him off the stage, instead of turning it down a notch so their voices
blend. They may want to study some performers who do great duets, like Stevie Nicks and
Lindsay Buckingham or Faith Hill and Tim McGraw to get a sense of how they should interact
and harmonize. As Arnel is the lead singer of Journey, it's his song, so she does need to be
the one to synchronize with his vocals.
