Well, hit songs aren't necessarily well written ones. I agree that Perry, Cain, and Schon together can create far greater music than any single one of them. But I also believe the duo collaboration with just Schon and Cain yields much more impressive lyrics than Perry alone; he had an army of songwriters at his command and didn't produce shit. Honestly, Cain's diarrhea is better than the majority of FtLoSM.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Street Talk did alright, I believe Perry had three top 40 hits off of that effort. It's just a matter of who is in that cluster of writers. And Perry did get a Gammy nod for Don't fight it, which he wrote. If he can write without all that mental anguish shit he seemed to be going though during FTLOSM, he might be able to turn out something decent.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that Perry's a shitty writer; he's not.

But you can take a look at the quality of songwriting pre-Cain and then with Cain and it is much more impressive. You take Perry's big solo contribution to Journey: "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" and compare it to "Faithfully" and it (at least to me) seems that LTS gets just curbstomped, lyrically. Street Talk was launched at a time when Perry could capitalize off of Journey's success and the songs that got radio play were styled to sound like Journey.

Don't get me wrong. I love Perry. He's the Voice. But Cain is the Pen and I give him a solid edge over Perry when it comes to writing.

Perry did write LTS, so he gets negative points for that definitely. It was a hit but I can't fucking stand it. He must have been thinking he was actually Sam Cooke when he wrote that garbage.

Wow, good point, Audrey. I didn't even think about that, but you're right.

Jana, that is the reason why i became a Journey fan when i heard their music, for me it doesn't matter who sing it, all Journey's lead singer were great and talented in their own way, it's their music that gave me hope and inspiration and became a part of my life. :)
