What was supposed to be a very minimal snowfall started increasing considerably, and the county was then forced to cancel school at about 11:00AM, and get all the children home. I don't remember the totals, but it was probably between 6-8" that eventually hit the ground.

This sounds just like the winter of 92-93? I was living in Greensboro at the time attending Guilford Co. schools and I remember that February having about 7" of snow and schools were closed for a week.

/storytime. :P

Nah, this one was definitely late 80s. Somewhere between about 1987-89/90. The winters of '93 and '94 were pretty rough though also. '93 was when western NC got dumped on pretty good. I think about 15" near Canton and Newfound Gap.

NC needs to invest in some of the Vermont/New Hampshire winter stuff. We were driving up there on Jan 1, and the temp was reading -14 and the roads were WET. I'm sure someone has a perfectly logical explanation for that, but it doesn't really compute to NC winter weather sensibilities.

I've had the same befuddlement living in Chicago. It was sub zero last week after a snowstorm and I was splashing in slush and the road was definitely wet. Back in NC it'll look wet, but it's just black ice. I don't get it. But I don't mind. My family is having a hard time relaxing each time I tell them it's snowed another half foot. "Are you going into work?" or "You'd better just camp out at work tonight." and I have to assure them the roads are navigable. Not always clean, but for sure driveable. Whereas in NC, I'd be trapped. Of course, everything being flat as a flapjack helps.

nice to know it's not just me. Of course, there is always the sudden jolt back to reality when NC declares a State of Emergency for 4" of snow. Ahh, the joys of the south.

Yep. And unlike these piles of snow here that have more or less been around since Thanksgiving, that stuff will be gone by tomorrow anyway.

Oh well... we know what to do with humidity, heat waves, and hurricanes... northerners know to shovel the damn snow. It's even.

They don't know yet, but you'd think it was y2k all over again!   Funny as hell, they keep "breaking" news about snow. We're probably getting less than 1 inch, and probably NO accumulation on the roads. Just cracks me up how much they over-kill these few dustings we get.

When I first got stationed at Ft Jackson in '93, we had about 2 inches of snow fall one night. I had to drive about 30 miles to get home, and I'm NOT exaggerating when I say that I passed at LEAST 25 cars in the ditch.  No injuries, just people driving too damn fast for conditions. People are idiots here when it comes to driving. I know they aren't used to driving in snow, but it's not rocket science!

People in Florida can't even drive in the rain. I can't imagine what would happen if it ever snowed here.

It just might snow tonight! lol j/k, but jeesh, the low is 30 tonight  lol

And yeah, yeah, yeah, I can just hear the "whatever"s and see the  from those of you used to cold, lol, but come live here in the scorching, sweltering, humid heat we get most of the year here and get used to that, and your popsicle asses would be freezing in the 30's just like us

 :P  :P  :P  LOL sorry Melly, just had to do that.

LOL, no thanks. I don't want to live anywhere where it is too cold all year long or scorching hot all year long either. I like having 4 distinct seasons, best of 4 worlds.......can handle most types of weather when I know it's only for a few months at a time.

Fairly simple explanation, actually. As soon as it snows, we have hoardes and hoardes of snow plows clearing the road down to bare pavement and that we salt the shit out of any leftover remnants. Even in the coldest temperatures, salt has a way of drying everything out. We're definitely prepared for winter's harshest blast in this part of the country. Those people in the south don't have a clue what winter or cold is but they have the summer thing figured out!

All things being equal, I would prefer to deal with snow and cold, than two months of 90+ degrees with high humidity and chiggers.

I lived in North Carolina for 13 long months (not that I was counting or anything) and it was definitely more than two months of 90+ degrees. I found the summer weather to be MISERABLE. Conversely, the winter climate couldn't have been easier to take! On another note, I have no idea what the hell a "chigger" is but I never heard of fireants until I moved to NC and those things SUCK!

Chiggars are little red bugs about the size of a grain of sand. They burrow under your skin, sometimes as many as a 100 or as few as 1 or 2. They have a fire-like itch that is nearly intolerable. They usually get on the lower legs, ankles and tops of your feet, but if you've been sitting in them, well I think you can imagine what I'm suggesting.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

I think Rick has the chigger description down. Closest I can describe the reaction beyond that is being attacked by south Florida mosquitos. Playing tic-tac-toe or drawing other designs from the bites is very easy as you have plenty of options for interesting designs. If further questions, come down here in the summer and sit down on a fallen tree in the woods. Basically, fireants are bad, chiggers are worse.

In regards to the 90+ degrees, that was said with the interpretation of "2 months of solid 90+ degrees without any break". Miserable is very accurate. As I said, give me snow and cold anytime. You can always put on another laying of clothing to warm up. Hit the NC summer, and you WILL be hot--there is no other option.

Holy CRAP is it cold, lol. Even FL cars are wimpy  The tire pressure light was on in mine this a.m., so I get out and check all 4 of them (yes I'm a chick who actually can do that, lol!) and they were all within the right PSI. So I was curious and looked and even the manual says temp changes can cause that, lol. So even our cars are big babies in this weather, lol.

Or maybe I should have changed the air in them from summer air to winter air
