OT: SICK of hearing about crazies and freaks

Postby Rip Rokken » Fri Jan 30, 2009 1:07 am

I take a peek at the news this morning and see this story about an Australian man who pulled his car over and tossed his 4 year old daughter over a bridge into the water:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,484828,00.html

Pisses me off to the extreme, and reminds me why I'm so much happier when I stay away from watching or reading the news, except for just skimming the headlines to see what is really going on in the world.

Do we really have that many freaks around, or is it just the "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality of our press that makes it seem like our world is going to hell in a handbasket. No one can deny that the bulk of news these days is BAD news... crazies, criminals, deviants, abductions, natural disasters, etc. Even in just the past few years, much of mainstream news has taken on a much more tabloid style, catering to the lowest common denominator mentality. Problem is, that lowest common denominator is increasing as people are getting addicted by all this "junk food for the brain". Really sad...

I'd love to find some decent objective news sources that concentrate on important things going on in the world, instead of this constant stream of emotion-manipulating garbage. Any sites you recommend?

Sadly, yes. I get to hear stories that don't make the news media all the time and I am convinced, yes.

I agree with SPH. When I used to work in the criminal courts more and family court, the things I heard that were done to children were horrific. A stepfather using the stump of his amputated arm to molest his beautiful sweet eight-year-old stepdaughter. There are so many forgotten abused children that their story will never be heard.

And I agree, Rip, I used to watch a lot more news and it's become too depressing when you hear those kinds of stories all the time you mentioned every day added with the depressing news on our economy.

I don't watch the news anymore, because of what you said, Rip.

There's an interesting line in the latest "Die Hard" movie about this topic:

Justin Long tells Bruce Willis that the Pharm. Industry is linked in with the News Industry - the news makes people so depressed / agitated, they need Meds to calm down / feel better. :x

Makes sense to me.....

Ditto. Yes, there are that many freaks around unfortunately. And the amount of kids I've seen hurt at the hands of their own parents, the people who kids just love no matter what because of their innocence, is awful.

Is very sad but all this terrible things do happen and not only in USA, is part of the human nature, but also there is another greats and beautiful things than human being do..but of course that don't sell that much, but don't mean that don't exist...here there is a channel who only gives news about crimes, and murders (and those are real), but the director of that channel is a politician who want to be president this year, and of course is better to show how bad our goverment deal with the crime, so the good stuff of the country is not mention very often, and that creates in people sort o paranoia, and become scare to all, and not trust in anyone. Human nature is so complex and is always surprising is the good and bad way..i just hope this kind of news become the exception and not te rule :?

I'm beginning to think we are surrounded by freaks, and if they are not open, they are closet freaks in waiting. Our society is designed to breed them.

Agreed...I totally avoided all print, tv and internet coverage in 2007 of that Korean psycho that killed all those students in VA. I knew the media would go crazy...I was alot happier and saner avoiding it. We had a family of 9 killed here in LA at xmas time...when I usually get depressed any way and I didn't avoid coverage.. wish I had. Feel fine now. Before that xmas thing, a couple of months ago, with the economy in the toilet I knew there would be tons of familys getting killed in murder suicides and it's already happening.

People need to figure out what is important in life and they'd be much happier and stop doing stupid stuff. I no more want to hear about these idiots than I want to watch the endless parade of human refuse on Springer, Cops, etc. My life has nothing to do with them, and you and I both seem healthier for ignoring it. I don't interact with them and don't find them entertaining.

Now what I would like to hear about, is what's being done to help turn society away from the self-centered "all about me" thinking that leads to this kind of acting out from all angles. But there's nothing "fun" about that kind of news, is there? Maybe I should watch the 700 Club?

Exactly! Duh, it's a no brainer, really.

Sad to say Rip Rokken, but it's only going to get worse. We're living in an unfortunate end age. If you believe in that.

Well the thing is, I wouldn't mind so much he was actually a half decent vocalist, unfortunately he isn't. The song writing and lyrics of Dokken are on par with Yngwie Malmsteen's "trilogy" album, it's fun for a while if you like meaningless songs with no real depth what so ever, and average singing, even for a hair band.
