Maybe everyone forgot, but that was part of his story during the show -- that he'd been living out of his car. So maybe this is true, or just a time tested sympathy ploy, who knows? I pretty much knew they had to pick him all along, because he was the only one who sounded like Michael Hutchence. The whole deal about being open to even women singers was never sincere for a minute.

I agree 110% Rip. How the hell are they going to have a female singer (no offense ladies, but that's like Journey replacing Perry with a woman) sing the hits? That whole show was nothing but a ploy to bring the band back into the spotlight and give them an audience to tour for. It worked very well, and I'm sure they're laughing all the way to the bank! Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying they're bad guys (I really don't know anything about the personalities in that band whatsoever). I'm just saying the show was a farce. I can't say I blame them though, as it was a brilliant marketing move!

Van Halen was seriously looking at getting Patty Smyth when DLR went south but she got knocked up so they ended up with Sammy.

I DO remember him saying he lived in his car BEFORE he got on the show. So maybe now it's just like going back home for him :?

Thank God! Sammy was the best thing that ever happened to VH. I know a lot of people are on the other side of the fence on this one though. I do love Roth's songs too, but I like how the chemistry changed in the songwriting when Hagar jumped in!

Thank you! my husband and I disagree on this. I think Sammy's lyrics were deeper. Where "Jump, might as well Jump, Jump, Jump might as well jump", was like.......  Musics good, lyrics empty. But that is just my oppinion. Dan and I argue about this from time to time, playfully of course. I also could have done without DLRoth's chap pants. Hairy butts are not attractive!

Never really got into INXS...very sad to see how some people have no idea how to manage money.

Fame doesn't do drugs. People do drugs.
Had he no discipline? This guy must have been a loser from the get-go.

Ok, who are you and what did you do to Arkansas?

Ark, I remember you being even keeled, intelligent and usually with insightful posts. Lately more negative than not.

People stray off track for all kinds of reasons. Having a millions of dollars, all the women you want and the adoration of millions seems like an easy way to get off track.

Drugs in rock and roll? Say it ain't so!

By sounding just like Michael Hutchence? As soon as I heard the guy on the record I was like "jesus, why'd they even have a competition?"

I think he's trying to present this as a sob story, but if I had a coke addict in my band, I'd leave him at an airport too. The rest of INXS is too old to be dealing with that kind of childish bullshit. The rest of us can't do drugs at our jobs, so neither should he unless he was prepared to deal with the consequences.

He had to "Cope with the realization that it would come to a screeching halt" or something like that...well, maybe if he dropped the coke habit they would've continued, y'know?

Seriously, I don't feel bad for this guy. At all.

Yeah, if the band had a bad history with drug abuse and are now staying clean, they wouldn't hesitate to kick this guy out for using drugs. To them, having a drug user in the band would lead to the death of them all.

I guess this guy was on contract like Arnel. His contract ended, that's all.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7906392.stm

Rock band INXS say they are "shocked and despondent" after singer JD Fortune claimed they fired him without warning.

JD Fortune, who was picked to replace the late Michael Hutchence, said he was broke and living out of a car following his dismissal at an airport in Japan.

"Not only are we shocked by the claims, even the place the supposed incident was to have taken place is a mystery," said a statement issued by the group.

However, they did not deny that Fortune was no longer in the Australian band.

Hutchence, the band's original singer, died in November 1997, on the eve of a tour.

His fellow members tried several replacements before picking Fortune, 25, in a 2005 reality TV show.

He recorded only one album, Switch, with the band - whose other five members have an average age of 50.

Last week, Fortune described how he parted company with INXS on Canadian TV show Entertainment Tonight.

"I was in an airport at Hong Kong and literally got a handshake," he said.

"I found myself really alone because I had travelled with these guys for 23 months. I don't know where I am going, from sofa to sofa, from night to night. I am trying to get through my life."

The singer admitted his dismissal may have been linked to a cocaine habit he developed while working with the band.

Members of INXS have previously spoken about the dangers of mixing drink and drugs - something they feared could have contributed to Hutchence's untimely death.

The band's reaction to Fortune's comments came via their "creative director and global business strategist", CM Murphy.

He said the group were "horrified" by the interview, and disputed Fortune's portrayal of their behaviour.

"The band have always stated to me that Fortune's services could potentially be contracted again when INXS next tour.

"In fact, he was next on my list to call regarding a very big recording project I am putting together for INXS at present," Murphy added.

"I guess I have no reason to call him now."

And from the front page:

INXS DID NOT DUMP JD FORTUNE:

From Undercover.com.au: by Paul Cashmere - February 23 2009

JD Fortune may not really have been sacked by Inxs but he will never get back in the band after last weeks outburst on Canadian television. The Inxs / JD Fortune saga will continue this week following an announcement from former manager and new record company boss Chris Murphy that the band did not sack JD Fortune.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Murphy says, "Not only are we shocked by the claims, even the place the supposed incident was to have taken place is a mystery to the band." He goes on to say that the band has a new recording deal coming up with his own label Petrol Records and that Fortune was about to be called. "I guess I have no reason to call him now," he said.
JD Fortune announced on Canadian television last week that he was fired by the band at Hong Kong airport, that he was homeless and living in his car and had a problem with cocaine. Fortune became lead singer of Inxs after winning the reality TV show Rock Star: Inxs. His Canadian TV appearance was in support of his forthcoming solo album.
Fortune's behavior has been somewhat erratic of late.

I don't know.....this is starting to sound like the singer said "fuck you" to the band, packed up and went back home. At home, got drugged up and then thought it would be a good idea to make up some weird story about being kicked out of the band. So what was it....Hong Kong or Japan?

Nah, they likely gave him the handshake at the end of the tour and he got confused. If you think about it, did JD ever actually say he was fired? Or was it more like "See ya later"? Their time was up. The band said goodbye. JD went back "home" and realized he had no money due to his actions on tour, and recording his solo. He freaked and when it got too bad he did the interview. If the band had not been in any contact with him (which the statement backs up) it would be easy to understand why he might think he had been let go for good. Especially when you add drug-addicted paranoia...

Yea I predict he records the next record despite this public paranoid meltdown. Wouldn't make sense to change singers at this point

Well, the problem really lies in "hurt feelings" now. INXS is gonna play hurt that JD would go public like that. If nothing else, they can use it to negotiate the shit outta JD. But like CM said 'I guess I don't need to cal him now'. Maybe JD will suck it up and crawl back apologizing profusely and publicly. But the band has a PR issue now...how hard do they want to work to fix this with JD?

Crazy to change singers to me. I remember when I saw the music video for the song Pretty Vegas they did with him and deciding it was the right guy they chose. Really good voice and I actually liked the song.

I agree. There are a lot of factors. JD's willingness to suck up. Negotiations which will benefit the rest of the band, not JD. Public image concerns. But the feedback for JD was very good, especially live. He did sound like the right person to me. And INXS had high visibility due to the show. It is unlikely they will be able to equate all of that again.
