That man has one hell of a voice on him.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?
Not really. I think he'd have had decent success on any musical path.
You can't deny that voice.
While I obviously agree, who else besides our best friend HH would have taken him off of a turkey farm?
With that said, I seriously doubt that he would have relegated himself to stay on a turkey farm forever. With his love of music, he would have gravitated back into the fray. I think, anyway.
I think so too. With his gift and ambition, he wouldn't have stayed on a turkey ranch where he was miserable - he simply needed the money and time to heal. The quality of the Alien Project demos demonstrates just how talented SP was and what he was capable of creating with another band. It dispels the assumption that he could not have made it without Journey. He was incredibly lucky though to join a band with such talented musicians and one of the best managers in music. I believe some things are destined and Steve Perry joining Journey was one of them.
I disagree entirely. That Steve Perry was an incredibly talented vocalist does
not mean that he would have made it without Journey. There are talented musicians all over the world who are ignored and fade into obscurity due to circumstances. And as far as I am aware, Perry's "retirement" wasn't temporary and it was a chance phone call from Herbie that changed his mind. There's always a chance, but after Alien Project and vice Journey, I think his chances were slim to nihl.
Because the sad lesson in the music business seems to be that great talent doesn't necessarily get you anywhere.
It is what it is
Perhaps it is what it was meant to be
Like the title says
Makes no difference.
Can't really know what could have been
if he had not answered the Journey call.
Can't really say that Steve was finished with the music biz.
Imagine having a band with the possibility of being signed.
Imagine making a great demo tape in the middle of 1977
only to have it derailed when the bassist dies on July 4th.
It would be alot to handle
It would in itself warrant some grieving & taking some time off for some soul searching & reconsider the direction of ones life.
I think he would have the right & resonsibility to himself to consider other possibilities.
I don't know when HH contacted Steve but it had to have been between July
& October of 77 when he was formally a part of Journey.
Now that is not enough time for anyone to say that in those few months Steve could even possibily permanently written off music
when he was still really in a disallusioned grieving state of mind.
Like the story says
Makes no difference
time has been written
as far as we know there is no going back.
It is what it is & it just reminds us that it takes just one person to change ones life.
HH & Steve may have had their differences but as far as music is concerned
Herbie was his angel/
He saw something in him & persisted to make it come true
or else many of us would not even be here reading this thread...
Everyone of us
no matter how small...(or in Herbie's case..."how big")
can make a difference....
