Your expert opinion has been duly noted.
Journey released quality music AND had success.
Your obvious expertise and credentials in the analysis of what is and isn't crap notwithstanding, this is 2009. I hope I don't have to remind you of the fact that music climate changes; Journey's peak of success was in the '80s. This is 20 years later and they're enjoying more success with this "mediocre crap" than with Arrival.
Following Arrival, they have been releasing mediocre crap.
In
your opinion. In addition to alerting you of the past 20 years, I'm afraid I have more bad news: you don't speak for the majority.

FANS should be DEMANDING they release the best album they can and let the sales go where they go.
If the sales and rave reviews have been any indication (I realize they're probably not in your world), the FANS are LIKING the "mediocre crap".
Quality and success are not mutualy exclusive...unless you think Infinity through ROR are crap.

Just in case you missed it, I'll post again:

Has anyone ever told you that you appear to be really badass when you tell people how to think? I like your method. Who needs fact or reason to be right?
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
