Album Discussion---"Escape"

i thought it'd be interesting to highlight a specific journey album and talk about it.one of my all time favorites is the escape album.with a new keyboard player and member of the band plus a more radio friendly edge they put out probably one of the best albums of the eighties decade.there were plenty of top ten smashes on here and they have aged quite well especially don't stop believen as it is used quite often in a variety of different setting from baseball teams adopting it to it being used on movie soundtracks.this is the album that turned the band from stars to superstars in rock.

first bought this on cassette when i was seven or eight years old back in 1982 and have bought it a half dozen times in different formats such as album,compact disc,cassette,etc.back then before it got worn out it was open arms that initially got me into them.later that would turn out to be my least favorite track on the album.as of late my favorites seem to be mother father,escape and dead or alive

Excellent choice, mike. For the longest time I was mostly a 'casual' fan (I call this the "greatest hits" fan). Once I got more into it and investigated the whole catalog, I couldn't believe I hadn't done it sooner. Escape is a STELLAR album, even apart from the big hits. Not one bad track on it!! NOT ONE. It's pretty clear why it was a #1 album.

Still they Ride is the very best song on that Album as far as Im concerned I always thought that one would be a top 10.

Escape is not only one of the best Journey albums, but its one of the best rock albums of all time. It managed to have the right mix of power ballads and mainstream rock songs. The album includes their signature song "Dont Stop Believing" and their highest charting single, "Open Arms". Some of my personal favorites off the album include: "Stone in Love", "Whos Crying Now", "Still they Ride", "Dont Stop Believing", and "Mother, Father". This album you can listen to from beginning to end and not be dissapointed. It captures the true Journey sound.

i agree also about still they ride.that one is way better than open arms in my opinion.would've been interesting if side one and side two were swapped because still they ride would've been great to close the whole album on.and escape is definitely one of those rare albums you can put on and listen to from start to finish because there really is no filler material in my opinion.most would say dead or alive would be the weakest link in the album but i've always thought it was a killer song.

I will never forget getting that album for Christmas when I was 14 and listening to it on headphones over and over, amazed that an entire album could be that good. Not to over-dramatize it, but receiving that album was definitely the most important musical experience of my life.

My favorite album of all time, by anyone. Heart and Journey are my 2 favorite bands, in that order. But if I had to pick one album by anyone, it is ESCAPE. I never get sick of it.....classic tracks all the way through.

I disagree that "infinity" is the "True Journey sound". When most people think of the Journey sound and the appeal I would have to say "Escape" by far. Escape put Journey in a league of their own and it seemed like they truly found their sound on Escape. I would agree that Frontiers is another great representation of the Journey sound. Frontiers had great songs like "Faithfully", "Send her my love", "Seperate ways"...etc.

Cool album, but pretty much their "left turn" effort. Then they went skinny ties with ROR and that was it.

Escape, I think, represents the perfect summertime playlist. Perry's voice sounded like it was going through flux into what would be the Frontiers-era voice, but it was still excellent. I think to appreciate this album fully, you have to listen to it in your car. The house just doesn't quite capture it.

Disagree...........I saw them play it live and those songs kick butt! Keep on Running is a power fast song that gives Neal plenty of room to show his prowess. I love all the albums for different reasons, but still love the old classics. Perry was a sight to see.

I've really been enjoying Departure lately.

Personally, I understand that Escape is to many fans as the quintessential Journey "rock" album, but though they may not rock as much all the way around, they have rocked far harder in subsequent albums.

Frountiers was harder...........but I still liked Escape. I actually saw them on the Frountiers tour...........but they did Escape music as well........great stuff!

Frountiers was harder...........but I still liked Escape. I actually saw them on the Frountiers tour...........but they did Escape music as well........great stuff!

I'm weird when it comes to Journey albums and rock to ballad ratios. For example, TBF is my favorite Journey album bar none. But I'd hate if they played a lot of TBF tunes at a concert. Regardless of the quality of the ballads, concerts should rock.

The first time I heard Escape, it was good. Second time, great. Third time fantastic.

6th time, I started to lose interest, and even started to pick holes in the album. Stopped listening to it for a loong time, then started again.
Not my favourite album of Journey's, but one of their best.

Escape will always be my #1 album from Journey. Bar none. Like someone said, I could just put it on in my car and drive for hours. The songs appear timeless. Frontiers was fun for me because I really started to learn more about the band as people. Though a darker album, it definitely showed a maturity to the band, but I also remember having a sinking feeling in my stomach as I learned more about their side projects and about some of the tensions.

Escape, what a quality album. And no matter what band there is, there is always "THE ALBUM". When we talk Metallica, theirs is the "Black" album, and when talk Journey, it's the Escape album, the most liked among the actual band & the long time fans, reveiws, charts, album sales, you name it.

Personally love it, but also certainly the most over rated Journey release as well. Every time a new Journey album is produced, they generally dub it the next "Escape" such as in 2001 when Arrival was released, which of course it wasn't the next Escape in the end. And I am pretty sure they tried to name Generations the next "Frontiers", and of course that failed miserably.

Escape is still excellent. Not my favorite, but certainly up there.

Compared to you people, I'm probably the johnny-come-lately to the Journey hardcore base; got their whole catalog in one swoop. Speaking from that perspective, and as a lifelong music fan in general, ESCAPE is their masterpiece -- not 1 boring song from start to finish. Not hard to see why this was their #1 charted album ... and sold 9M units to date. The songs in it are timeless ... still sounds great (relevant) today. As much as I like Infinity-Departure, most of the songs there sound dated.
