Album Discussion---"Revelation"

Postby mikemarrs » Sun Apr 05, 2009 9:34 am

this 2008 album put the band back into the top five in the album charts for the first time in over 12 years and also featured new singer arnel pineada.this album was received pretty good overall by the fanbase and they quickly went on the concert trail to spread the word about their new vocalist and promote the new album which also went platinum.

what are your favorites one year after release?

would you consider this one as good as trial by fire or arrival?

It's not as good as Trial By Fire in my opinion, and on par with Arrival. "Change For the Better" is one of my favorite tracks of all time; just fantastic.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Good release, but nothing more.
Not as good as Arrival, or pretty much anything featuring Perry.
Waaaay better than the abomination that is Generations.

Worse than both TBF and Arrival. Revelation and Generations are equal opportunity suckage. :D

I have been listening to Revelation the past week more often and it has definitely grown on me. what i needed and wildest dream are the standouts for me. although wildest dream uses the same little riff from Liberty, but that really adds to the song. production-wise it sucks. compressed to hell. I think the lyrics in never walk away are written to steve perry haha

Man, nothing in the Journey catalog is worse than Generations, perhaps RED13?. But even those are pretty good CD's as stand alone efforts. Of course if you are comparing anything post Perry, it will always be inferior IMO.

Revlelation is the best release since Trial By Fire, IMO.

Hang on, did I say Generations? damn I meant Revelations. All these stupid similar sounding names, with no originality. One thing they have lost over the years as well, is actually picking decent album title names, they are absolutely horrendous.

Anyway, I meant Revelations, and not Generations.

haha ya they have pretty bland album titles, and some silly song names, but who cares as long as the music is cool

My favorites are Turn Down the World Tonight and Like A Sunshower. But it's a good CD that I can listen straight through and enjoy all the songs. It was nice to see all the good reviews the album received. 8)

Turn Down The World Tonight is a great one. I like Sunshower, but the lyrics are so damn syrupy. It does have a nice groove to it though.

I just really love the tone of Arnel's voice on it. I've said this in the past on MR, but it has a great retro southern rock vibe to it.

The Good:
Change For The Better knocks me on my ass everytime. That one song is as good as anything this band has ever done.
What I needed is a very good song as well....but not awe inspiring as the above mentioned CFTB.

The Bad:
The fucking retreads disc and Augeri era songs should *never* have been done. Argued to death, no need to do it again....but seriously. If this band is so recharged with its singer, why the fuck did it have to reach under the sofa and pull out old shit to dust off? Gay, stupid, poorly done!

The Ugly:
Unfortunately, The album has some of the worst written songs every crapped out of this bands orafice as well. The worst set of lyrics ever produced is that piece of shit, What it Takes To Win. Cliche city....poorly written, poorly executed, poorly conceived.

When you take the agregate of the good, the bad and the ugly, the album comes out average. But CFTB gives me a hard on....I cant deny that. But if you take one of the most stunning songs ever done by this band in CFTB and balance it with one of the biggest pieces of shit, What it takes to Win....it's hard to swallow anything other than a lukewarm review...

Amen, dude. "Let It Take You Back" would have been better suited instead of "Faith in the Heartland."

It's one of my very favorites. Kicks some serious ass; showcase performance all around.

It's the only live song that I worry about Arnel's voice on. He screams the "C'mon, C'mon..." so damned loud and powerfully at the end that it seems to be on the very end of his vocal range. Great shit, though, man.

Yeah, it's much better live. The best video I've ever seen of this one was the one in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Even Cain looks rockstarish towards the end.

I forgot to mention Change For The Better. This song is so good I could have seen a Grammy nomination for it. They could have performed this song live at the Grammy's and kicked ass better than some of those disappointing performances I've seen on there.
