Sam Cooke - Teenage Sonata

Postby Art Vandelay » Sat Apr 11, 2009 2:17 am

Just heard this song for the first time in a while. Everything about it oozes Perry's style.

May be one of the most beautiful vocal performances ever...by one of the greatest singers ever.

Well, Perry's never made any bones about the fact that Sam Cooke was indeed one of his early influences. Listening to this clip it's very clear that Perry learned his lesson well....

Absolutely. Sam influenced many. Perry, in my opinion, is the only one to serve his style true justice. Perry and Cooke, two aces!

Would've been interesting to see how Cooke's voice would've changed. This is one of the best songs showing his range. Excellent post.

That is one of my all-time favorite Sam Cooke songs. It's a shame it isn't more well known. Listening to it takes me to my "happy place." Perfection and pure magic.

I have never heard this song before. You sure can tell where Perry got his style from on this one. Great song.

Very lovely song, thanks for sharing! And yes, Perry is strongly influenced by this man, he even says so. Both beautiful vocalists. I like many of Sam's songs. Romantic and lovely.

I have this box set I bought when it first came out and it's absolutely the BEST box set to own. It's a must for any cd collection. Teenage Sonata is a great song. Send Me Some Lovin' is another song that just oozes Steve Perry as does One More Time. Another great Sam box set is the 2 cd set Sam Cooke's SAR Records Story 1959-1965. Mostly all gospel with the Soul Stirrers. I have this one also and it's another must if you like Sam Cooke.

You can hear alot of vocal similarities between the two in Sam's version of Unchained Melody. It's a suprisingly understated version, but a real vocal masterpiece IMO. Enjoy!

Good clip Nikki. Would've loved to have a Perry version of this song.

Ya gotta think he laid down tracks of a lot of tunes back in the day that we've never heard.

Steve did sing a few seconds of Unchained Melody during Super Jam in 1978 when they sang "Love Hurts".

Here it is. :D

FTLO, thanks for the clip. That's one thing he should've done at some time during all his downtime. A tribute to his inspirations.

Had he done it in his prime voice, it would've been a spectacular album.
