New AT&T Wireless ad

Postby ebake02 » Sun Apr 12, 2009 12:17 am

Anybody see the new AT&T Wireless commercial? They made an excellent song choice. I've saw it twice on TV already.

I wonder how long it'll take for it to sky rocket to the top of the Itunes download chart.

I don't know if it's been mentioned or not but, I seen Jim Carey's movie called "Yes Man". Separate Ways is in the movie and the credits. I was shocked.

Now for AT&T, I love it as AWYWI is my all time favorite Journey song.

I saw it last night, too. Must have been the first time they aired it. Catchy tune for their ad.

That song is ad ready out the door. Made the ad barely watchable, hate these dumb ads.

:?

Okay. I'm confused. I thought Perry was dead set against Journey songs being used in commercials/ads. It seems, however, this Journey song (and only this Journey song) has been used on more than one occasion for just such purposes. Which is it? What gives? Also, going forward do you think IF there should be any interest from advertisers to use post-Perry material in ads, we'll see/hear more Journey songs used in ads?

It's a lot easier to call up Sony and say can we use this song and let them handle all the paperwork, permission , etc. With the band members.
The redos were a bonus disc under a different label and not availble in every market anyway, I don't know if using them is even an option.

This is an interesting question. I personally don't see any post-SP songs worth putting in a commercial, frankly, but I am not a post-SP Journey fan so my views are skewed.

Ford's been using a Journey song for years for advertising one of their truck series. In fact, I'm not sure, but I think it's the same song being used? Not sure why it's that much of a surprise.

I believe there was a non eclusive agreement with song writers Perry and Schon when AWYWI was first used in CaddyShack which has allowed it's continued use with other customers. This song has been used in a dozen or more commercials over the years. I think Perry can't block its use from the previous agreement, that's why this is the only Journey song you always hear in commercials because only Sony has to be dealt with. Sony and ASCAP just have to be notified and pay out the royalties accordingly when the receive them from the one using the work.

The band itself doesn't determine if the song can be used. Their publishers, record company and songwriters (who might be in the band) determine that depending if it is exclusive or non exclusive.

Some musicians sign non exclusivity agreements with their record company when they start out just to get their songs noticed. I think that is what happened with this song as Journey still wasn't quite the household name yet in 1980. Steve and Neal still get songwriting royalies obviously but the song probably is pretty much Sony's poperty.

For anyone wondering why they wouldnt just use a re-record, Most music producers for movies dont even know about the re-records and just go to Sony automatically for requests to use Journey materials. Remember that the re-records were a Walmart exclusive, not available for customers outside of North America or as downloads on itunes or Amazon. Anyway, why pay Perry royalties for a version that he's not even singing on, just use the original. Most people would think it was him anyway and if they're interested in the song they'll go to Itunes which carries Sony's version only.

I just walked in the door and heard this commercial on t.v. :) I also think that when that t.v. show, "Glee" premieres on May 19th that DSB will get back up there on iTunes...that is if it is included in the actual show like it has been in the trailer.

Funny, my Wife and I had just finished watching "Yes Man" and I saw the AT&T commercial almost as soon as I turned the DVD player off, Journey seems to be everywhere.
