I don't think he lost it (he still hits some fairly high falsetto notes in "Anyway" circa '94), so much as it diminished. He was still a very high tenor, but due to age and overuse, I think it was much harder for him to hit.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Yes; you are correct....but what I mean is this:

People were all quick to say "Oh GOD - his voice is GRAVEL! What the hell HAPPENED??" on ROR.

BUT:

If you really listen to ALL the Vocals - he used the "Escape" vox on Backing Vox only.....wanted a different tonal sound on Front; got it....

Listening to "Happy To Give" right now on 'Phones (Time3 Disc 8) ) and to me, that's the overall "sound" he was going for.

Happy to Give is one of the best songs he has ever recorded.

Perry had said he intended to do just that in an interview i had read years ago. I can't remember where i read it from but certain things i do remember, that was one of them. Perry also stated he (Journey) recorded 3 songs in the bathroom from the Frontiers album, also he had stated he got up right from bed in the morning and went straight to the studio to record 2 tracks off ROR. For the rasp sound he intended to get. He also felt back in the day that the resaon they and himself changed his overall sound (Voice) was on purpose so that the world would not get burnt out on the same tone or sound.

Ya know how much I love his background vocals on that song. :) I don't get why a lot of fans dislike ROR (yeah, yeah, I know "too poppy", "no Smitty/Ross", drum track, etc."), but SP's vocals & emotion are top notch.

i sure hope so, that would be great to hear him get a second wind. I have always wondered all his friends and all of his music circle buddies, e.t.c., have told him for so long to do something. You would have thought he would have by now. Hmmmmmm.

Come on Nora. You have got to be drunk to ask this question. He definitely lost some higher end on the ROR era vs the Escape era. My God, this was a studio session you heard, not live. They never played that song live.

SP would be the first to tell you he lost some high end from 83 on out. There's a reason Frontiers went to that "angular" sound and ROR live sounded a little rougher. It's not a bad thing at all, but it is true..SP lost some high end, no biggie.

It pains me when people complain about Perry's vocals on FTLOSM and the accompanying tour. The intent was not to try and replicate the Steve Perry of the late 70s and early 80s - it was to give birth to a brand new sounding Steve Perry, and that's exactly what was accomplished. He still reaches incredibly high notes on FTLOSM, but just in a new way.

I really don't know if there's any other singer in this world or any other worls for that matter who could have pulled off the richer, deeper, more appealing sound that Perry did as he started to change his overall tone. I think of all the acclaim he has received, that should be spoken with as golden trophy.

I love his vocals and most of the songs. What I can't take and makes me skip through too many are the poppy arrangements with the bass and keyboard. Who knows maybe Neal too on some. I can't figure it out. I'm not a musician. But it ruins it for me on so many songs. It's not a pop sound in a good way. Much of it is in a dated way. It's a shame b/c I love his voice on here and the songs are good once I can get past some of that. I just have all the songs I love off there on my iPod.

You know what's a shame, Perry didn't start his own band or even join another. I'm talking like a year or 2 after raised on radio. Now that would have been very interesting. Would he have changed his style, tone, etc...

+1

While Perry's early vocals were impressive, his voice didn't even start to get good to me until Frontiers. After that, he could do no wrong in my book.

SP voice was awesome in a way to me that is hard to define. Was it natural, did he build it up as he began his teenage years or did it just happen. I mean come on, i listen to Adam Lambert, so many rock singers for so many years and while their good and maybe even possibly great, i still can't get over Perry's voice, in every level. His sound and style are like no other. That's what i'm saying, i wish he would have even left Journey and started something different.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "natural". As the legend is told, Perry began singing at an early age (around 3yrs, depending on what you read). Perrys father was a singer. Perrys mother encouraged his singing. So, he was already starting from a strong foundation. From all accounts, throughout his youth he had pretty much been working at honing his craft. Sprinkle in a little Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson, and voila! a "natural".

what would've been so perfect would've been for him to take that solo/deeper tone....ROR onwards but put that with some harder rocking guitar like any way you want it,stone in love, etc. instead of a poppier sound.

and I have often thought that this is one of the things that has made the idea of comming back a diffcult one for him. People are quick to point out the differences in his voice from one time to the next. He is always said that he is a perfectionist...so he comes out with new stuff and it's different...and people say it's not as good as back in the days of Journey. For somone who is so identifed as the "Voice" it may make someone feel like why bother? They will all say that I could not have come back with Journey my voice is not that voice anymore, he might want us to remember what was....not what now is.

I agree. One of my favorite songs by Perry was 'Oh sherry" for the tone of his voice. Another I have been listening to recently is "I Stand Alone" for the tone of his vocal work. I also think that when it comes to phrasing, the guys a master at it. Sinatra had it, Darin had it as well. There are alot of great voices out there, but phrasing properly is almost as important as voice quality. Perry has both, which is a real tough act to follow.
I don't think that Perry needs the ultra high end vocals to be popular, his ability to sing better then many today(if what folks say concerning his voice is true) coupled with his ability to 'emote' and phrase would make him a killer vocalist, even in this day and age. Add to that the mans stage presence and his past work with Journey and the 'aura' he brings to the table and man, you have something we haven't seen in a performer in a long, long time.
The question is WILL he bring it to the table. Lets hope so
