No, but the point is that it can happen to anyone, I mean today you have tests and the smarter/safer approach to physical relationships so most of us are smart enough to take preventative measures and avoid contracting it. But all it takes is trusting someone a little too much or (since the symptoms sometimes don't surface for 10 years) being totally oblivious by accident. Back in his day, people weren't so aware of it as they are today. Could he have been more careful? Probably. Who knows. But this stigma that AIDS is the "gay disease" is backwater rubbish, and anyone of any intelligence knows that.
If you drink after someone with mono who doesn't know they have it yet, and you get it too, did you bring it on yourself? No. Could you have been safer and not drank after anyone at all, yeah. But, oh well. That's life. We're just humans who don't always think.
