Yeah, she needs to shut her face.  I vididly remember watching Thriller on a Betamax about a year before she was even conceived. Being old sucks.

Oh yeah, I totally coordinated my conception to take place in November of '84 just so I could piss off people on the internet that Al Gore hadn't invented yet!

Hey... ya'll can shut it too! I missed good Journey, I missed Thriller, I had to grow up in the 90's with all those slouchy, greasy, grungers and cheesy rappers, and bad rock. And I still can't rent a car without paying an extra $25/day! And I guarandamntee you my driving record and ability is better than 97% of the general 25+ populous. Never fear, I have a birthday in six weeks... I'm getting older too. But you don't see me bitchin' about it. :P

Talk to me again when you "got old"...not "getting older"! ;)

Ahhh Betamax. My aunt had one of those. You pretty much HAD to have a console TV in order to hold the weight of that monstrosity!

Oh the good old Betamax tapes. It was great when those came out. Sure beat watching home movies on an 8mm projector and a large white screen. :)

Well at least I am of the VCR and Cable TV generation.......born the summer of 69

PFFAAAH! Shut your face. We had a floor model console TV when I was a wee tot, and we didn't own a Betamax, we rented ours along with the Beta tapes from the video store! ...And after the divorce my Mom found the money for a brand new VCR, which in those days was $400, if I remember right. Now they're what... $15, if you can even find one anymore.

I might be younger than you, but I'm not some generation Y yuppie larvae.

Remember when VHS porn tapes were over a hundred bucks? And laser disc players needed to be loaded on top?

My favorite video of Michael's dad!

and btw- I believe the "I'm too distraught to come to the memorial service" remarks from Diana Ross and Quincy Jones are code for "we want no part of this." Just my humble blah blah blah...

Over a hundred for a VHS porn? When was that? I missed the laser disc players loading from the top. I remember when VCRs were top loaders though.

But from what I've picked up on this thread, there are lots of people here feeling as though MJ was one of their best friends. So if any one of you would have knocked on his door at Neverland, do you think he would have invited you in and let you sit with him and drink coolaide? No, he'd a called security to get you the hell off his property, in short order!

one of the dopiest posts in MR history...

And in second place . . .

Well you know....I guess it could have been alot worse. He could have been found with a rope tied around his genitals. That definitely wouldn't have looked good for him, especially because of all the past accusations and whatnot.

Not true. Last number I heard he sold 422,000 albums (including digital downloads) since his death. The real sign of change in the music landscape is that he sold over 2 million individual tracks.

They're saying on the radio this morning that those numbers aren't accurate because of the way the digital sales are reported and the numbers are more than double that. We'll see how it shakes out in a few weeks.

*raises hand*
Responsible for 10 CD sales, and 2 DVD sales since his passing.
Three of those CDs are on back order until the end of the month at least.
I wonder if a lot of people are like me, and were big MJ fans in childhood, but lost interest or forgot about him after the 1993 controversy. Then realized on June 25th that they missed the music. I had Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad on vinyl. Those three plus Dangerous on cassette, and a long lost VHS. Hence the massive consumption of sales.

Somewhat like you (except I wasn't a child in the early 80's :) ). I've listened to the MJ music I had right up until his death, but not often. But like you, I realized how much I missed some of that music. So I too have ordered 2 more CD's, a DVD, and grabbed a concert from DimeADozen.

I'm glad you quoted that. I must update my total.

4 DVD sales now.

My neighborhood record store had HIStory on Film II (I have part one) and imported copies of the Japan show on the Bad tour. ...Missing 'Another Part of Me' though. *pout*

Lol... I'll stop buying DVDs when I can find a copy of 'Ghosts'. 8)

Matter of fact, many of the kids were singing songs, none were MJ's. So who was MJ's fan base? None were in the four fully loaded train cars last night that's for sure.

I read that exact article this morning... amazing. But that article mentions the compilations and Thriller... so I wonder if the 800,000 includes everything, or just the ones that are making the big numbers. I ordered Blood on the Dance Floor and Invincible from Amazon, and I'm sure I'm not the only one went after those, but none of the articles I have seen about his sudden booming album sales even mention those.

Well, Invincible is kind of a random album that flew under the radar because of his mortal battle with Tommy Mottola and Sony, they didn't push the album, or really market it. Blood is an obscure almost concept album of dance mixes that unless you really know your shit, you're not going to be familiar with... unless of course someone tells you how awesome it is ( :D ). My BOTDF is backordered for shipment on the 24th. Invincible was backordered, but I just got word it will ship tomorrow.

I can totally believe all these sales. And it's almost heartwarming to see people still realize the sanctity of physical music. People have to think I'm crazy buying up all this stuff recently, but with many of the titles I realize, if I don't buy them now... they will be out of print and unavailable on down the line.

Plus, its like my Mom saved all her vinyl for me, so I'm saving all my valued CDs for my kids. Obsolete or not, it's still a cool tradition. 8)

I just wonder when we're going to see DVDs of Moonwalker hitting the shelves. (*fingers crossed*)

If the rest of it is as good as the title track then yeah! You were not wrong on this one. :D

But to my way of thinking, even though these flew under the radar, when you search for MIke on Amazon and B&N, etc., these choices still come up, and even if you search a certain album, say you search only Thriller, you still get the "also by this artist" choices, so I would imagine there are people who are hot on the trail of the other ones that see these and click "add to cart" as well, so I'm just wondering what kind of sales these are realizing.

Mine aren't shipping for another 2-3 weeks.

Billboard reports that 82% of the Jackson albums sold this week were CDs (vs. digital downloads). Last week, 43% of the Jackson albums sold were CDs. I think this shows that on a special album, people want the CD as a keepsake. (What a retro concept!)

I used to have actual MJ albums. Man I wish I had kept them! :(
