Journey
'Don't Stop Believin' ' This song's journey, it goes on and on and on and on
1981: Journey release their seventh record, "Escape." Rolling Stone dismisses it as "well-versed schmaltz," but it goes on to sell more than 9 million copies, making it the group's most successful studio album to date. It produces five singles, including "Don't Stop Believin'."

1984: Lead singer Steve Perry releases his first solo album, "Street Talk." He runs the numbers and realizes keeping all the profits is better than splitting them between an entire band.

1991: Just as grunge starts taking hold and making bands like Journey seem irrelevant, Perry makes what remains his final live appearance with Journey at a tribute concert for promoter Bill Graham.

2001: Journey releases "Arrival" with vocalist Steve Augeri, the first of several Perry replacements. Sales falter as fans apparently do stop believin'.

2005: After popping up on "Family Guy" and MTV's "Laguna Beach," "Don't Stop Believin'" sells 21,000 digital copies, the start of an online rebirth for the song.

2007: "Don't Stop Believin'" scores the controversial finale of HBO's "The Sopranos," sparking another 41,000 downloads in one week.

2008: With a new Perry soundalike fronting the group, Journey issue the album "Revelation," which includes a newly re-recorded version of "Don't Stop Believin'" and a live take of the song on the bonus DVD. It quickly becomes Journey's biggest-selling release in a dozen years.

2009: A new documentary about
the band, "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey," is due for release in December.

He's a bit more:

Ramona Diaz, the director, is Filipino

I really hope she gives the band and all previous members some attention on this and keeps it accurate, historically, not just a huge slant toward Arnel's tenure with the band. From the beginning to where it is now is going to be a great story if all eras are given ample coverage.

thanks for the additional info

cast does not mention Perry or any other former board member, appears to be a story based on Arnel joining the band

Given who is directing it, it doesn't appear that it will be anywhere near ample coverage for all eras. The slant will probably be Journey began when Arnel joined.

Well, she resides in the US, so hopefully she has good enough sense to understand that if this thing is all about AP, she will create an outrage among long time fans. I don't want to prejudge anything until I see what it's really like. I want to see the whole story. I think it needs to be told properly.

I agree with you. I'm a loon from way back, but Journey has moved on and the current story needs to be told as well, but not at the expensive of the rest of it. We'll see.

Well, I think you're wrong. Why should it create an outrage? It's not the whole story of Journey from '78, or even much earlier, to 2009 and doesn't have to be. It's not supposed to be ample coverage covering all eras, but obviously some coverage of Journey's history.

It is based on the story of Neal plucking Arnel from obscurity and the documentary basically was following Journey's current Revelation tour thoughout 2008, ending in 2009 in Manila when shooting the DVD, and showing us all the behind the scenes of the tour. She is an award-winning documentary-maker who lives in the States, but it was always supposed to be about this tour with Journey hiring Arnel. I'm sure in interviews in the beginning setting up the documentary naturally Journey's history will be covered, but that will be about it. I am looking forward to it b/c I love behind the scenes look at bands touring.

I loved the old Journey video with Perry following them on one tour. It was fascinating to me, all the trucks necessary to transport, the setting up the stages, etc., the band members behind the scenes and showing them preparing for shows for a specific tour.

A snapshot of Journey at this moment in its 30-year history, 2008, as it emerges with a new lead singer.

Jana, I stand corrected. I completely misunderstood what this documentary was supposed to be about, somehow believing it was supposed to cover Journey's entire career as a band. Now I see that's not so.

This has been discussed before in the Journey forum way back when it was first announced about someone making a Journey documentary. Yes, the talk about this docu appears Arnel is the focus here ... boy made good/rags-to-riches story ... camera following Arnel and the band on their concert tours.

Okay, not meant to be a history lesson of Journey ... I just hope it doesn't come off elevating the stature of AP at the expense of other past members. If that is the case, you will see outrage ... not only from the loons but other long-time Journey fans as well.

Annie, really that is what I felt too. Don't get me wrong...I'm totally into Journey right now, but I hope this does justice to the past as well.
