1981: Journey release their seventh record, "Escape." Rolling Stone dismisses it as "well-versed schmaltz," but it goes on to sell more than 9 million copies, making it the group's most successful studio album to date. It produces five singles, including "Don't Stop Believin'."
1984: Lead singer Steve Perry releases his first solo album, "Street Talk." He runs the numbers and realizes keeping all the profits is better than splitting them between an entire band.
1991: Just as grunge starts taking hold and making bands like Journey seem irrelevant, Perry makes what remains his final live appearance with Journey at a tribute concert for promoter Bill Graham.
2001: Journey releases "Arrival" with vocalist Steve Augeri, the first of several Perry replacements. Sales falter as fans apparently do stop believin'.
2005: After popping up on "Family Guy" and MTV's "Laguna Beach," "Don't Stop Believin'" sells 21,000 digital copies, the start of an online rebirth for the song.
2007: "Don't Stop Believin'" scores the controversial finale of HBO's "The Sopranos," sparking another 41,000 downloads in one week.
2008: With a new Perry soundalike fronting the group, Journey issue the album "Revelation," which includes a newly re-recorded version of "Don't Stop Believin'" and a live take of the song on the bonus DVD. It quickly becomes Journey's biggest-selling release in a dozen years.
2009: A new documentary about
the band, "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey," is due for release in December.
