Out of curiousity, did anyone watch last night's episode on surviving a home invasion? Considering all of the threads here on the horrible things that can happen in life, I'm surprised there aren't more posters on MR watching it!
My cousin's very elderly father-in-law was killed by an intruder a few years ago - she was a drug addict who broke into his house looking to steal. He came downstairs to see what the noise was and confronted her - she could have easily fled, but stabbed him instead.
Even though I did take away a few very good points, I would have preferred a more likely scenario for a home invasion up here: it seems that either the victims are elderly couples or a person alone, and punks break in, beat them up for the hell of it and rob them for whatever they have - often the victims don't have very much, but are vulnerable targets. It wouldn't have hurt to spend a few minutes on how to deter criminals from targeting you in the first place!
Next week's episode is on surviving an avalanche and bear attack. Well I live in an area where people are killed every year in avalanches and it doesn't surprise me to see bear tracks in my yard, so I'll be watching. I started learning about bear awareness when I was 6 and we moved into a relatively remote area, and then avalanche survival when I was 11 and started heli-skiing. I'll bet I still learn something new!
