OT: Surviving Disaster on SPIKE

Postby SherriBerry » Fri Sep 04, 2009 7:56 pm

I just caught this show on TV Tuesday night - it's called 'Surviving Disaster' and hosted by a former Navy SEAL. I've only seen the one about being caught in a hijack and it was very interesting. Of the new shows I've seen so far, it's the only one I plan on seeing again. Has anyone else seen this?

Here's a link to the show's website:

It was so good my dad didn't even channel surf during the commercials in case he might miss something! I think the hijack episode can be watched on the SPIKE website and I found a clip of a preview for next week's episode on surviving an inferno:

They dramatize a scenario and the host instructs people through it. I read the bio on the host, Cade Courtley, and he was an operational SEAL, a sniper for Team 2, and an instructor, so I'm pretty impressed with his resume. I'm looking forward to this show - finally something worth watching!

Yeah, same here. It's along the lines of Survivorman, which is another great show...granted this one is a little more extreme, with the whole 'disaster can happen to you' thing they've got going.

I'm going to have to set the tivo!

This show is amazing! Growing up in the mountains, I'm already familiar with a lot of outdoor preparedness/survival basics, but every week I learn something new.

For anyone who doesn't normally watch this type of show, next week's episode on Tuesday is about surviving a home invasion and you can watch the episode online after the broadcast. It's worth investing one hour of your life, because it may save your life or the lives of your loved ones. I wish no one even needed to think about stuff like this. What a world we live in - the story about the assault victim in the wheelchair made my blood run cold.

Out of curiousity, did anyone watch last night's episode on surviving a home invasion? Considering all of the threads here on the horrible things that can happen in life, I'm surprised there aren't more posters on MR watching it!

My cousin's very elderly father-in-law was killed by an intruder a few years ago - she was a drug addict who broke into his house looking to steal. He came downstairs to see what the noise was and confronted her - she could have easily fled, but stabbed him instead.

Even though I did take away a few very good points, I would have preferred a more likely scenario for a home invasion up here: it seems that either the victims are elderly couples or a person alone, and punks break in, beat them up for the hell of it and rob them for whatever they have - often the victims don't have very much, but are vulnerable targets. It wouldn't have hurt to spend a few minutes on how to deter criminals from targeting you in the first place!

Next week's episode is on surviving an avalanche and bear attack. Well I live in an area where people are killed every year in avalanches and it doesn't surprise me to see bear tracks in my yard, so I'll be watching. I started learning about bear awareness when I was 6 and we moved into a relatively remote area, and then avalanche survival when I was 11 and started heli-skiing. I'll bet I still learn something new!
