If it has a really strong first single and is promoted well, sure it could.
If not, it might match Revelation's Gold status.

If they promoted him as the voice of Journey making his long-awaited return and really put the overall PR machine on overdrive then PROBABLY.

The PR caveat here is crucial. I don't believe SP is anywhere near the household name that we think he is. There is no comparison between him, and say, Whitney Houston whose #1 debut I think is the origin of this question.

Depends on the quality of the product. Personally, I don't give a fuck. An album isn't worth a shit to me if you don't prove it's legit and perform the songs live. For me, Perry was the greatest ever because of those Escape and Frontiers tour bootlegs. He had the ability to make the songs, in many cases, even better live.

Do you think it would help boost album sales if Perry added a re-recording of "Don't Stop Believin'"?

What's good for the goose in this case. Screw respecting the spirit of the song, it's gotten more travel than a 20 baht whore in a Thai refugee camp.

He's not a household name. Just the way it is. I say it won't sell as many unless he really gets behind it and tours or does some performances.

He can make himself one very quickly in this day and age, however. Like Deano mentioned in another thread, if he got on American Idol, did a guest night promoting his album, got on there and sang DSB with one of the top contestants and what not, the album would sell so fast it wouldn't even be funny, especially if he threw a re-record on there.

Perry would never do this. He respects the legacy and the catalog too much, unlike his blood sucking "brothers" who just need more money to renovate the Open Arms pool and pay a handful of ex-wives monthly.

Revelations didn't sell because they toured Jana. It sold because of Pinoy nation. That is fact.

Oh hell yeah!

I hope RJ talks him into it. I wouldn't be surpised if it was the most-watched episode of the season (other than the finale).

Yeah, I don't think just cold releasing it and doing a tour would be enough, he'd have to take advantage of something like AI or an Internet promotion giving away songs or something to really remind every body who has heard him but doesn't know who he is (or people who have forgotten who he is) about himself.

I wasn't addressing why Revelation sold the amount it did. I was addressing the question would Perry sell more, and I said unless he did more than just release the album, like do a small tour or do some appearances like on TV or whatnot, he wouldn't sell more. Maybe even do one show and a DVD with it.

Fuck the Legacy. People Justified the re-records last year by saying they were Journey's songs and they could do whatever they wanted with them.
The songwriter can do what ever he wants with them also as he gets paid for the usage regardless. Go for it Steve, re-record the whole catalog if you want. Mix in Oh Sherrie and some other solo hits and let it fly.

But I think you're missing the point. I believe Steve feels that rerecording them would hurt the legacy. I'd agree.....The retreads that Journey pissed down our throats is a defecation on the legacy of the music.

Could you see Led Zeppelin rerecording stairway to heaven with Jason Bonham? It would piss all over the legacy of the original. That's what Journey has done with the retreads. They took some fucking noname off of youtube....slapped him in front of a mic of shitty pre-recorded tracks.....slapped it on a disc...and cheated their way to platinum....

So the point is...I think it's not a case of whether or not Steve Perry CAN re-record his music.....but more so, SHOULD he.

Or what if Mick Jagger retired and The Rolling Stones found an impersonator and re-recorded "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" among other Stones hits... how would that go over? Sorry, I can't resist using tired wornout analogies like that - LOL.

I was reading the comments in this thread and was going to be serious and add my thoughts but I lost it when I saw these two comments one after the other:

Perry will sell gazillions...okay..maybe thousands... remember Dont Stop believing is the reason journey has sooo many *new generations of fans... its not arnel its the song... and Perry sand the song...
a Perry record easily sells over 500,000 copies... especially if a ballad hit radio before release date... I can hear it now... WAS THAT PERRY singing... then the buzz begins...

All kidding aside, Perry already sold 55 million records with Journey. Even his weakest effort, TBF sold one million copies compared to 750k from the latest release.
He has a solo album that sold two million copies.
What else is there to do?

I wouldn't be so sure of that, Deano. Surprisingly enough, Revelation never hit #1 in the Philippines. I think it was more the story of how Arnel came into this band that sparked sales, plus there's some pretty decent songs on it as well, of which a couple of tracks got a fair amount of FM airplay.

Maybe Perry can tour the country of his parents' origin Portugal with Randy Jackson on bass guitar and do a remote American Idol from Portugal to tap into his heritage? I'm sure they could easily sell 500k of his new solo album to the Portugese people to match Arnel's sales from the Phillipines.

I am sure that Perry is already onto this strategy due to his personal advisers who frequent this forum.
