My favorite part...
"...as soon as we could see clearly through our big black eye, man we lit up your world like the 4th of July...."
Hmm, that was one of the lines that made me the saddest.
i'm with you, ari. i don't like the beating of the chest, i'm bigger than you, shock and awe type stuff. so many innocent lives were lost and unfortunately continue to be lost.
Christ, it's a cathartic lyric, you bleeding hearts take yourselves so seriously sometimes.

Shouldn't it be songs written for 9/11 or inspired by it? Lots of erroneous songs so far in this thread by my measure

WTF is that supposed to mean? You "bleeding hearts?" I could think of a lot worst to be called than a caring liberal. Rather be called 'liberal' than a selfish "me me and mine Neocon."
Rockindeano wrote:Wait a minute Matt- I just read Keith's verbiage. Kind of "Hey you got over on us but here comes big bad America." Stupid to say the least. I would rather have my President read his fucking briefings and not have to have memorable 9/11 tunes, but I digress.
The word's to The Rising are a bit more real and poetic/prophetic than the word's to Keiths' tune. And I don't say that because BS wrote that song. I happen to dig Toby Keith, but he isn't the stinkiest shit in the proverbial asshole, now is he?

I know that's exactly what he was sayin - kind of a childish sentiment, but it's obviously meant to be (1) cathartic and (2) aimed at the country audience. As we know, country music isn't know for deep meanings and complex sentiments. I'm not trying to say the song deserves to be enshrined in the lyric hall of fame, just needs to be taken for what it is.

And I haven't a problem with the NASCAR part of our electorate. They mean well, just a bit different in their presentation. Good ol folk.

My point exactly. Liberty doesn't fit here for the reason you just mentioned Corn Dick!![]()

Didn't Josh Grobin release a tribute? I'm not a big Josh Grobin fan, so maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

What? My whole point (and Dean's as well, I think) is that the OP was asking for songs written specifically in response to 9/11, hence the language of the original post "I got to thinking about the songs that were written in dedication to the people whose lives were forever changed and honor for those brave souls who stepped up to help others."
Performances that merely pay tribute to America or what not don't fit the intended bill.

For starters, see my two references earlier, Paul McCartney - Freedom and Dream Theater - Sacrificed Sons. I know there are at least some country songs that were written for it as well.

Yes, Matt, I did see your two references earlier but I wasn't aware of them until you mentioned them here. What I meant in my first comment was that I, personally, couldn't think of any songs that hadn't already been named. Not trying to diss you..... I'm just saying.....

No, no I know. I was just trying to say that there are indeed songs out there inspired by it.

Both "The Rising" (as do most of the songs on the CD of the same name) and "Undivided" speak of what the aftermath of 9/11 caused to the masses. Songs about America and liberty sure ain't to me what I think about when I think of a happening that changed peoples lives forever - I find meaning in songs that speak of pain, heartache, loss, love, fear, hope and unity amidst diasaster; songs that touch on the depth of the human soul is what I'm talking about. I do happen to take song lyrics seriously so call me a "bleeding heart" but a tragedy of this magnitude should envoke songs of nothing less.
Shame on you guys for losing sight of what it is all about.
I think of 9/11 everytime I hear Billy Joel's Miami 2017 (I've Seen the Lights Go Down on Braodway) - here he is performing it at the tribute concert

and just who are you to tell people what songs should or shouldn't mean something to them? As long as the song says something to a person about the day should not make a difference to anyone else. Its not always your way or the highway you know.
