Let's be careful to not throw any song with 'America' in there as 9'11 worthy. Anyone watch that stupid ass Sean Hannity? That dumbfucker thinks Martina McBride's, Independence Day is about freedom, when in reality it is about spousal abuse.

Shouldn't it be songs written for 9/11 or inspired by it? Lots of erroneous songs so far in this thread by my measure

My favorite part...

"...as soon as we could see clearly through our big black eye, man we lit up your world like the 4th of July...."

Hmm, that was one of the lines that made me the saddest.

i'm with you, ari. i don't like the beating of the chest, i'm bigger than you, shock and awe type stuff. so many innocent lives were lost and unfortunately continue to be lost.

Christ, it's a cathartic lyric, you bleeding hearts take yourselves so seriously sometimes.

WTF is that supposed to mean? You "bleeding hearts?" I could think of a lot worst to be called than a caring liberal. Rather be called 'liberal' than a selfish "me me and mine Neocon."

It means it's a fuckin song lyric that's meant to be cathartic, not to be taken as some moral reflection. It's country music, they don't exactly deal in complex metaphors in that business

Wait a minute Matt- I just read Keith's verbiage. Kind of "Hey you got over on us but here comes big bad America." Stupid to say the least. I would rather have my President read his fucking briefings and not have to have memorable 9/11 tunes, but I digress.

The word's to The Rising are a bit more real and poetic/prophetic than the word's to Keiths' tune. And I don't say that because BS wrote that song. I happen to dig Toby Keith, but he isn't the stinkiest shit in the proverbial asshole, now is he?

I know that's exactly what he was sayin - kind of a childish sentiment, but it's obviously meant to be (1) cathartic and (2) aimed at the country audience. As we know, country music isn't know for deep meanings and complex sentiments. I'm not trying to say the song deserves to be enshrined in the lyric hall of fame, just needs to be taken for what it is.

And I haven't a problem with the NASCAR part of our electorate. They mean well, just a bit different in their presentation. Good ol folk.

and just who are you to tell people what songs should or shouldn't mean something to them? As long as the song says something to a person about the day should not make a difference to anyone else. Its not always your way or the highway you know.

Um, no not quite, Twinkies. This song was written in early 80's.

Other than Springsteen's contribution which has already been mentioned, I honestly can't think of another song that was inspired by 911. I can think of lots that would be suitable if used in a memorial, but none that were inspired by the actual event.

Didn't Josh Grobin release a tribute? I'm not a big Josh Grobin fan, so maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

For starters, see my two references earlier, Paul McCartney - Freedom and Dream Theater - Sacrificed Sons. I know there are at least some country songs that were written for it as well.

What? My whole point (and Dean's as well, I think) is that the OP was asking for songs written specifically in response to 9/11, hence the language of the original post "I got to thinking about the songs that were written in dedication to the people whose lives were forever changed and honor for those brave souls who stepped up to help others."

Performances that merely pay tribute to America or what not don't fit the intended bill.

I began this thread with two songs that I know were specifically written with the tragedy in mind. Both "The Rising" (as do most of the songs on the CD of the same name) and "Undivided" speak of what the aftermath of 9/11 caused to the masses. Songs about America and liberty sure ain't to me what I think about when I think of a happening that changed peoples lives forever - I find meaning in songs that speak of pain, heartache, loss, love, fear, hope and unity amidst diasaster; songs that touch on the depth of the human soul is what I'm talking about. I do happen to take song lyrics seriously so call me a "bleeding heart" but a tragedy of this magnitude should envoke songs of nothing less.

Shame on you guys for losing sight of what it is all about.

I think of 9/11 everytime I hear Billy Joel's Miami 2017 (I've Seen the Lights Go Down on Braodway) - here he is performing it at the tribute concert

I would be careful to "shame" anyone on this Board, especially from the fact that you are a newbie. If I didn't know you, I would shove a Mazda 626 up your ass sideways.

As for the Rising, the entire record is about 9/11. Portland, I see you already have been rightfully scolded, so i won't shit on you regarding Liberty. I like that song a bunch, but it can't have been written for 9/11 you tick turd! :D

Beyond the Clouds was written for 9/11 as was Coming Home by SS.

Now after closely examining the lyrics on two of the songs I had in question, I can see the entire Rising CD is about 9/11. Initially, Mary's Place sounded too upbeat in melody and all I remember from The Fuse was "slip off your blouse." Okay, I'll have to admit Deano's right. Though I still think the "shame" was in order given the reason and topic.

And what it makes me feel is sad; sad that the initial deaths happened, sad that it pulled so many countries into war, sad that people are still dying, and most of all, sad that someone's response isn't 'this is a fucking tragedy, hang your head and weep for the madness we inflict on each other' but is instead 'yeah, we're blowing the shit out you! Take that!' Sure, he is entitled to that response, and Angel is entitled to feel the same way and love the sentiment; I find it saddening that people gear up to be gung ho, psyching themselves up for more of the same, when all I want to do is scream 'enough!' There has to come a time when we say 'enough is enough, let's stop the eye for an eye before everyone is blind.' And by we, I mean all of humanity, not just the West.

Or is my sorrow not a valid reaction, because I'm a bleeding heart liberal?
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!
