Raspy Steve with every song too fast and no groove ? Why ? I know we all have our favorite periods but damn that tour was lame. I have not heard a single boot that I liked from ROR. Steve sounds great singing the ror stuff and thats it. The whole feel of the band was gone and I dont think I could bear seeing Randy Jackson in spandex and Cain in that Neon paint splattered nightmare trench coat with matching Keytar. Please god no !

Houston 1980 would be so fucking cool.

see, that's where we all disagree. With the exception of seeing Gregg Rolie with the band, Houston 1980 holds little interest for me. Worse setlist (which is pretty much covered on the Captured live album), and Perry high in the clouds. He was a much better singer by the '81 Houston show.

otoh, the Mountain Aire dvd sounds pretty good to me. Perry sounds good on that one unlike some of the toasty shows later in the tour.

I would dearly love a pre Escape show to be released, possibly from 79.
Perry's vocals were (imo) at their ultimate peak of perfection. :D

Already have an escape era dvd, the Houston show, and its good, but the setlist isnt that impressive. The vocals are the best from Steve in the early eighties, but 1980?? Thats even b4 escape...they had like no hits b4 then and really not that impressive of a setlist. No frontiers or ROR songs either. I personally like the sound of Perry's voice on the Mountain Aire shows where he is singing "Girl Cant Help It", and "Ill be alright without you". The mountain aire ROR show would definetly have a great setlist featuring songs from every album, but Trial by fire. Plus the production quality, stage setup, and the energy the guys had when playing at mountain aire is awesome to watch.

Yeah, for as much love as Houston 81 gets, I really barely watch it. The setlist is just nothing special.

I agree with you on the old stuff. I don't like it, ruins many great songs and Perry looked like he was on speed up there. But I love the ROR songs and thought he did fantastic on those and looked fantastic, so why I would vote ROR. And Cain's outfit and perm and Randy in bright spandex are offputting.

Same here. I watch it once and a while because Perry sounds unbelievable vocally, but as far as the setlist...i skip through alot of the songs on the dvd to get to the hits.

Something from Frontiers would be nice. Anything pre-Escape is just ear piercing garbage, we already have an awesome Escape DVD, ROR, with the exception of the actual ROR album songs, was Perry singing like his crotch was on fire and a TBF DVD would be like Helen Keller putting on headphones.

I don't usually agree with you on not liking Perry's voice at all pre Escape b/c I love Departure CD with the bonus tracks remastered and Infinity and love his voice then for most songs. But there are quite a few songs I don't like of Perry's voice when it was so high. I have the 1980 Departure boot of Japan and love it b/c of Rolie being on there, and for me always wanted to see what he was like in concert, and the rocking and jamming aspect of the concert, especially with Neal, and it's a great concert in so many ways. But I have to admit there are quite a few songs that his voice grates on me on the boot and not enjoyable, like Dixie Highway.

Dixie Highway live Japan: Great rocking song, not crazy about the vocals at all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5moA7adq6-g

Homemade Love live 1980: What makes up for it is Neal's performance and the rest of the band's peformance. Hate his high vocals on this. Ughhhh.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Apc5RpCPYCo

But Precious Time and I'm Cryin' and Too Late, the perfection of Stay Awhile, and People and Places/duet with Neal, just amazing with Perry in that tour.

Precious Time: Just the Whole band on fire on this song and love his vocals. One of my favorite songs ever with Journey.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZxLuzx9DBg

And, to me, one of the coolest live performances by this band ever and what I love the Departure boot for:

My 2 cents on Dixie Highway......

In future concerts, I hope Arnel will take on this song but with more grit, just to give the song more muscle.

IMHO, I think Arnel is giving Journey rock songs a heavier sound than Perry. I know the Perry fans prefer his sound better, and that's where we differ. I like the wholeness and the grit Arnel is offering to the songs.

Well, I wouldn't mind seeing Arnel try Dixie Highway since I don't like Perry's vocals on it from the early days.

But re the rest of your comment, Chubby, what you don't understand is from album to album his voice was changing and there was different depths to his voice all the way through. These clips are from his earliest days that SJ was talking about when his voice was much higher. Example below Send Her My Love later album, the sound Arnel tries to stay so closely to. You can't get the appreciation for the different shades of his voice and delivery of songs unless you really owned the music they put out over the years and didn't just check songs out on Youtube with average sound.

Um..I have to agree. For all that Journey has done right with songs over the years, I just have to say DH sucks. I never liked it at all, so in this case it's not the singer its the song!

I learned that from reading here. But there's a reason why I did not quote anybody. I was giving my opinion on the song. I am not criticizing Perry's voice by any means. I just believe that Arnel has more grit in his voice than Perry. Some people can't tell the difference but I could, even compared to the song you just posted, SHML. That's all.

Arnel is 42 years old. At 42 Perry had some grit in his voice too...just sayin. It's a natural vocal aging process and Arnel will hopefully enjoy it while it lasts because age catches all. Well, almost everyone, except Anne Wilson, John Farnham...and perhaps Pat Benetar. :D

I still contend that Arnel has more grit in his voice (based from his PI albums or youtube vids) but it's not important to argue about.

I am sure he's enjoying this because singing is his passion. I agree about the age thing and this is also the reason why I want to enjoy him/the band as much. You'll never know what lies ahead.

Speaking of John Farham, I read that he's on the top two of Arnel's favorite.

Wouldn't surprise me. He's covered a few Farnham songs before, and Farnham tends to rate fairly highly on the singer's favorite singers list.

Welll, I like Dixie Highway. But the first Journey song I every loved was Do You Recall? (except I thought the name was Stormy Weather). I still love that song :D :D

I want the Generations tour DVD for the pre-Perry songs. I love those first 3 albums. Of course, I know I'm in the minority here.
