We watched it again at some friends' house and really loved it, for me even more the second time. Just a fantastic concert.
I was poundin some beers the other night with my buddy who I just recently found out is HUGE into Journey and we A-B'd it with 01. The verdict was unanimous: 01. The production on this disc just leaves a lot to be desired, even if you totally dig Arnel's performance... which I don't here.
Matt, so much of that 01 disc was 'canned' that it's going to be better. I also didn't think the new one too dark or anything either. I DID notice that the stage reminded me of the early zoo videos for some reason... ?
I wasn't just focusing on Arnel, but he stood out. His pitch was great, his ad libbing to me was fine, etc. I dug Neal's playing more on this one. I'd LOVE to have that compressor that he's got built into his Les Paul. Friggin' expensive!!!
Also, the extended versions of the songs made it for me. I was also more impressed by Castronovo's drumming that I was previously. Before, he just seemed 'a basher'. I like his playing on the Manilla show a lot. I still prefer Smith's approach, but Castro's doing fine.
