No one bought the CD for the rerecords. Look at the Greatest Hits sales as proof. Just last week alone, Revelation (with rerecord greatest hits) recharted and the Greatest Hits had a major bump in sales. Not to mention Greatest Hits still sells like a motherfucker. They had to do the rerecords like it or not. That's Walmart. Again, you have no point except to complain.

Ehwmatt, Revelation is a better album than Arrival. JMO

I am very persuaded by the argument that the re-records didn't spurn sales of Rev as some would believe, given the ubiquitous and numerous Journey GH packages out there. The only added value the re-records added to the avg consumer was maybe a general sense that they were getting a lot for a little - i.e. 3 discs.

As for Revelation being better than Arrival, well we will just have to disagree in a big way there. I don't listen to Rev at all any more, save two songs. Nearly 9 years later I still play the fuck out of Arrival.

I agree re the point about the re-records not being a big factor in helping to sell. But they loved that the DVD was on there.

RE whether Arrival or Revelations is better. Arrival is a better album than TBF overall for reasons I've stated b/f, more sophisticated rock album versus almost completely pop album for a lot of TBF. The problem is Augeri's vocals on some songs, while not bad, aren't that great, but yet still a soulful delivery on all. Somebody said he had been sick. Maybe the reason. Where Revelation would have been better if it had a more polished delivery on some songs, Arnel's vocals in tone and range and the classic sound was the standout for me on this CD. I would have to say because of the actual melodies and lyrics and for the actual sophistication of an older rock band releasing music in this decade but still retaining a band sound even on ballads I choose Arrival.

Yes, Arrival stands out because of its diversity in sound (e.g., it's not an attempted rehash at the 80s as Rev is, albeit a spirited attempt) - and because for me I find the songs stronger overall. As I said, I listen just a few choice Rev tracks at all anymore, and it's only been a year and a half.

Edit: Put SP on Rev and keep SA on Arrival and I still think Arrival kills it. Too many weak or rehashed tunes on Rev for me.
I agree Arrival was there last viable Cd. they really tried to do something, rev, was some Steve a started and Neal showed up at the end after Soul Sirrkas, Rev has three good songs, the rest are Friga left overs

LOl.. C'mon, there isn't anything to take from that comment. Merely pointing out what the guys did with that song. Was I not factual?

And while I am here - what did I ever do to Def Leppard?

Of course....it is mainly Eclipse and WOA influenced, but there's at least 3 tunes that would fit a JSS lead Journey.

It's not 100%, and not even close. It is good though, and better than a lot of what is released these days. You have to understand Andrew's ratings, and how they apply to your listening tastes. Personally, anything under about 90% isn't all that good to my ears as a general rule, barring a few instances where I might like something he doesn't care for or visa versa. If you read and listen to enough of what he reviews, you can figure out about where you would stand on a release between the rating mark and the description itself. The scores are WAY too high across the board (and he's admitted this), but they are generally consistent--and that's the major point.

As far as rating albums go, I'm not even sure I've ever heard a 95% album, let alone a 100% one.

Thank you :) And you are right... As far as 95-100% albums - I have a TON! You tend to get that over 25 years of collecting....I never got some folk saying that no album could ever be perfect. Sometimes I think that reflects someone looking too hard for perfection.

Thoughts?

Getting back to the point, I understand WHY the scores have to be somewhat inflated to avoid infuriating the labels/artists, but I don't think there is anywhere near enough room for an "album of the year" versus a "classic of the decades". I think we can all agree on the general opinion though, even though the actual number rating may differ wildly.

That's got nothing to do with it. Nothing whatsoever. Although the labels do get shitty at me from time to time...haha

It's purely because when i started the site, I started rating things at a level that (in hindsight) was too high and over the years as records have improved and albums got better - I simply find myself reaching a higher average overall.

How to tackle this into the future is something I have given a lot of thought to - with no clear answer just yet.

The labels only complain if they think I'm being unfair to them personally (I'm not). If I had started with lower ratings overall, then a label or artist would then be happy reaching a higher grade generally. Not necessarily something over what i am doing now.

I guess I'm weird because I actually enjoyed several songs on Yeah too  And they suited Joe's failing voice. I think Hell Raiser was my favorite on the album, though I do like Golden Age too. I really liked a version of "stay with me" that Phil did as a bonus track too. When you look at the fact it's a covers album, I really think it was done well. There really aren't too many good covers albums out there.

And I'm sure they care.

I'm sure they don't, being that these are the same guys who don't realize that their own last album was a huge middle finger to Journey.

If you feel that way about them and their shows, then why do you keep going to their shows...as well as going backstage to meet them?

I don't. I feel that way about that ridiculous piece of unnecessary crap called Revelation Disc 2.
Why I go to the shows has nothing to do with how I feel about some of them as people or their goofy marketing choices.
I go because I like the MUSIC and the live experience, not that I owe you an explanation.

Blame Walmart, that was not Journey's call. It was part of the package deal. If you're going to criticize Journey, then criticize Kiss, Foreigner, and many others who have done it through the years as well.

Oh yes, that's right. Walmart held them captive in a dungeon and threatened to boil their family jewels and eat their children's souls if they didn't sign the deal... I keep forgetting that part. Clearly, they had no choice. And you're assuming I haven't criticized other bands that have done it.

I've grown tired of debating with you. Be gone now. *shoo shoo*

That was the deal. There is really no debating it. IF you bought Revelation, then you simply don't have to listen to disc 2....It's not like you paid extra $$$ for it.

The Wal mart deal is better than any record deal out there these days.....At least for classic rock bands....

You're not that weird.... "Yeah" may have been the best thing Def Leppard has put out since Retro Active.

I despise cover albums but this one, for some reason, I enjoy the hell out of it.
