Could Perry do this?

All the family & scalping info aside, would Steve Perry be a hit in Las Vegas?

Garth Brooks in Las Vegas: It's a sellout
October 24, 2009

About 30,000 tickets for the first 20 Garth Brooks' shows at the Wynn Las Vegas' 1,500-seat Encore Theater sold out within five hours this morning, Brooks’ representatives announced this afternoon. The Wynn reported receiving more than 5.4 million page views on its website when tickets for the first five weekends of shows were put on sale at 8 a.m.

As many as 40,000 people were waiting online at any given time, Brooks’ spokeswoman said in a statement. Wynn representatives also issued a warning to ticket brokers who may have bought tickets, stating that any sold for more than the face value of $143 ($125 ticket price plus fees) would be subject to cancellation at the hotel’s discretion.

Owner Steve Wynn said at a recent press conference that he and his staff would be taking stringent measures to prevent scalping of tickets to the smaller-scale shows. Brooks recently announced the end of his self-imposed retirement, a decision he had made in order to stay home in Oklahoma and raise his children.

The deal with Wynn allows him to play four shows over a given weekend and still be able to take his three daughters to and from school each day. The plan calls for 15 such weekend appearances per year if Brooks and Wynn are satisfied with the way the engagement plays out.

The initial round of shows are Dec. 11 to 13, Jan. 1 to 3 and 22 to 24, and Feb. 12 to 14 and 26 to 28. Brooks said he planned to schedule the year's performances roughly a quarter at a time so he could plan them around his children’s extracurricular activities.

I don't think so. He doesn't have the drawing power of say a Celine Dion, Elton John or Rod Stewart. He couldn't fill the room nightly and that's what is needed.

Just my humble honest opinion.

Could he play four shows in a given weekend the way the article says Garth is going to do it? I don't know about that after 15 years of not performing live.

As much as I would want him to do well, I don't think that as a solo artist, he has the draw that Garth Brooks has. Although they both "retired" while they were near the top of their game, Garth had been selling out huge venues on his own for years, and at least at the time, there were fewer country artists with that kind of popularity (actually I think he had quite a cross-over popularity altho this comment is based on no "facts"). Perry's situation is different in that his greatest success was with a group that has continued to work over the years so some of the enthusiasm in seeing him perform is diffused. That being said, there are alot of us that would be there for multiple shows. Count me in!!
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Correct.

The fact is, he has kept his name away from the spotlight for just too long to be able to do what the like of Brooks and Dion and others are doing out in Vegas with shows/schedules like that. Not a slam, by the way. not by any means. Just a plain fact.

This is not to say that he couldn't draw. But he'd have to start it off by going on the road and pretty much reintroducing himself. If that were a success and he built something, which he could, being the name that he is, then yes maybe one day he could do what they're doing.

I just don't see the whole 'Vegas Act' vibe on him though. Even if he did it, it would seem weird. :?

Garth has sold 128 millions albums in North America alone, second only to the Beatles. Obviously, there is a market out there for him.

Bono pretty much proved the other night, you don't have to still be able to sing the way you did on the records or the way people remember you. The U.S. isn't a Karaoke culture. Originality still wins out in most cases, regardless of vocal degradation.

Yeah but wouldn't a casino laden town somewhere in Texas or the South be a more likely area for Garthy Boy? Those 128 million sales are legit, but you know that at least 110 mill came from those hokey fuckers down south and in the lower central states.

I think a lot of those sales came from his Wal-Mart Deals. His first exclusivity deal with the store sold 20 million copies in one year, prompting the store to invite him back for more exclusive collaborations. One of his albums with them sold 500,000 copies in one day. I guess in Wal-Mart's eyes, Garth's albums aren't seen as loss leader products like the packages done for AC/DC, Journey, Foreigner, etc.

Just move here if you're that jealous BEOTCH!!!  I'm no longer a country fan (only was for a few years), but Garth has WAY more fans than Perry could ever dream of. Just saying... he was a legend to a much broader audience. He was always a solo artist when it came to his hits. Perry's solo work? what... 2 albums, and really only 2 solo hits? that doesn't add up to enough fans to sell out the place night after night. Sorry.

I would probably be willing to pay $1000.00 per ticket to see Perry, but I don't think I'll ever get that chance. It would be nice if he could get that same deal as Garth, but I just don't think he'd be able to keep the place filled. That's all they care about. :(

Garth was the first country album I ever owned. He was a huge crossover artist b/c of his energy on stage and rocking hits and ballads. Most people who didn't care for country loved Garth in my circle of friends.

Garth is one of a few who is in a class by himself. I'm not sure exactly what the mass draw of him is... His voice is nothing spectacular, and the first time Travis & I saw one of his videos, Travis thought he had Down's or something. He puts on one helluva show, and has a BADASS attitude that the women love, IMO. Probably most people (who aren't Garth) would be laughed out of the business if they tried what he did with the whole Chris Gaines crap. He is a gambler, and isn't afraid to take chances, and I think that's part of his appeal as well.

I don't think SP would do as well in a Vegas deal as Garth, Celine, etc. Partly because he has been out of the biz for a while, but mainly because his isn't a household name - his fame came as part of Journey. He simply doesn't have the name recognition to get people in the seats in that type of environment, IMO. But what the heck do I know... I'd love to be wrong. :)

I'm sure he can sing fine. I'm also fairly sure he can't sing every Journey song note-for-note like they are on the album.

I'm also sure that since he's Steve-mf-ing-PERRY, it wouldn't matter a bit. He'd still sound like Steve Perry, and that place Garth Brooks is playing is only 1500 seats.

He could easily sell that out, every weekend. He doesn't have to sing like he did 20+ years ago for people to want to hear/see him.

Robert Plant's voice has taken the biggest hit of anyone I can think of right now (zero upper register) and he still could sell out an entire tour of places that size. Perry could, too. (not that he's anywhere near as big as Plant, but you get the point)

Perry could do it with the right PR program. He needs something solid in that arena to re-introduce his name. Frankly, I doubt he has the desire to do it up as big as Garth is doing it.

I think a lot of people underestimate Perry's potential and I have no doubt his voice is in good shape. Could he tour like Journey did? No, but Vegas is certainly doable and he could pace it so he didn't burn out.

I was thinking something along the same line. It's all in the promotion and packaging. Not only do I think he could do it, but I really wish he would do it. Fifteen hundred seats a night, three to four nights a week? Doesn't sound out of reach, it all goes back to promotions (and of course what Perry feels he's able to commit to), IMHO. Of course, I'm not an industry insider, so what do I know...

If Perry decided to do 20 shows in a 1,500 seat Vegas venue and they were Friday and Sunday shows for 10 weeks there wouldn't be one unsold ticket.

Garth Brooks is more "show biz" than SP - same with Celine, Whitney so I can't imagine it - no, not at this point in time. I can't even imagine SP doing any shows anymore...but, then again I thought the same thing once upon a time when the Journey fans were petitioning Oprah to have Journey on - stranger things could happen.

I honestly don't think that is out of reach for him and it wouldn't surprise me if he were thinking something along those lines. That is something he very well could pull off. And if he is being truthful in how much he likes to perform in front of people, in an intimate setting, that would be a win win.
