Our little French Poodle is speaking like a true PT, they all sound that way trust me and he just cares
about your health. It's his job and way of life. They don't try to make people feel bad it just comes natural!!

Come on. If you got a medical condition, then sure - it's a whole different story. But seriously:

Losing weight is not hard. Living healthy and working out is the easiest and most fulfilling thing in the world. It's simple: stuff your body with more energy than it really needs, and you put on weight - it's that simple! It's so typical of overweight people to whine and bitch. Being overweight is extremely egotistical: Fat people have a greater chance of getting dangerous, life threatening diseases - thus hurting stuff like the job marked.I promise you a fit, healthy person got less sick days than a overweight man/woman And you shorten your lifespan and the different activities you can do - so if you got kids, you not only make yourself as a bad role model, but you run the risk of dying early cause your heart couldn't take it anymore. And it's not about stuff you like to eat. Fuck, if I could choose I'd eat fries and chocolate cake all year long - but instead I eat healthy, boring stuff. Why? Cause the rewards are that much bigger. (This is not directed at you at all, just a general rant/evangelical sounding preaching  )

You are fortunate to have a job where where the environment favors you being able to be physical all day (I'm being serious, I didn't mean to be rude earlier, I was actually trying to be funny and failed miserably). I agree that exercise is fulfilling, but there are people in professions that work 60-100 hours per week, wearing a suit, high heels and even traveling. It's NOT that easy to find time to work out frequently, and if you have a significant other and kids, there's even more to do. Yes, obese people do have lower life expectancies, but there are issues of quality of life involved as well. There has to be a balance between artery-clogging, empty calorie foods and the "healthy, boring stuff. "

Indeed, as a life-long athlete and just someone who enjoys being in decent shape, that's one of the things that scares me most about starting a family. It's hard enough just with work. Parfait's not talking about your run-of-the-mill middle aged paunch though (I don't think), he's talking about the people who just totally let themselves go. A health/genetic issue is one thing, but by and large, there are a lot of people who really just have no self-respect and totally let themselves go.

Even if you're really strapped for time and enjoy greasy/junky foods, one can certainly exercise a degree of willpower and not eat junk for 90% of your meals. Save the bad stuff for a special Friday or Saturday or what not, skip the snack before lunch and before dinner etc. EVERYONE can find time for at least two 20 minute cardio sessions during the week. It might not be the thing they want to do if they work long hours, but it's not impossible. Failing that, just some simple willpower and moderation with the diet can prevent one from getting big to the point of posing serious health risks.

There's a ton of hereditary heart problems in my family, so I really watch it now and always will. Hopefully that'll serve me well in the future, as I admittedly can still pretty much eat whatever I want and not suffer the consequences as long as I'm working out (can't get away with not working out any more though and not gaining... even 23's different from 18)

I told Parfait in a PM that I am not mad at him, I just wish he would understand like Portland said not everyone can loose weight quickly, or easily. I agree we would all be better off if we were more fit. But I am so glad my husband is not shallow and loves me just the way I am. He knows I try every day, and it is a painful struggle for me. I used to be so thin. I am puttng a pic of me when I was thin and what I look like now. Trust me I live with this heartache every day.

Cut yourself a break and have something you enjoy a couple times a week. That's the recipe to successful healthy eating, imo.

The two hardest parts of a weight loss/fitness plan for every one, even super fit people trying to get in better shape are at the beginning and end:

1. Sticking to it when results don't come right away, which is frustrating for all

and of course

2. Keeping the discipline up to maintain the positive results.

Not trying to be a saint about what you're eating 24/7 goes a long way towards overcoming those twin hurdles, imo. Oh, and always drinking lots of water... lots of dieters underestimate the importance of that. It helps shed excess water weight because your body won't be forced to retain water. Being super hydrated feels great and it helps hang overs too! ;)

My grandma’s one of my biggest fans, most reliable supporters & closest confidants & she probably weighs about 300 lbs & so I’m not about to pass judgment on the weight issue b/c I love my grandma with all my heart. She’s one of the most beautiful people I know.

As a dancer, I’m fortunate not to have to deal with weight issues (yet) b/c .... like it or not .... I hafta exercise like a mad man. I don’t get to have too many off days. And YES, I do believe that if I were to stop dancing & continue eating the way I do, I would start to gain some weight.

Having said that, I find it strange that it’s always the thin people who’ve never had to diet who seem to know exactly how to lose weight. And before I get criticized, ..... (Parfait ... Matt) .... I’m not talking about losing 10 or 15 measly pounds so please don’t come back at me with your heroic story of that one summer when you chunked all the way up to 150 & had to drop a few by running track. I’m talking about those who’ve lost a significant amount of weight.

A thin person telling an overweight person how to diet is about as credible as say, me, telling someone how to quit smoking, or say, a person who doesn’t drink telling an alcoholic how to cure themselves.

I find it amazing that the so called diet experts always seem to come up with new & improved ways to curb someone’s appetite: “Here, eat 'this' & you won’t be hungry.” To me, that makes about as much sense as telling an alcoholic, “Here, have a great big glass of water & you won’t be thirsty.” I’m no expert on either vice, but I’d be willing to wager that an overweight person doesn’t overeat b/c they’re hungry anymore than an alcoholic has a drink b/c they're thirsty.

I think when you’re addressing the issue of losing weight, some people tend to oversimplify the problem. I think it’s much more deeply rooted than casually telling someone to cut back on their consumption while increasing their level of activity.

Good thoughts Jason. Yes, the bottom line is calories burned must >>> calories consumed. And while I think that there are some physical and emotional factors that impair that ability, unless you can get to the place where you can change your way of life and possibly alter your whole mental thought processes about nutrition and exercise, you will not succeed. The way to get there is different for everyone - some are motivated by a desire to change, some require outside help by using surgery or counseling. Funny thing - even if you have a BMI below 25, you still eventually die. There are worse things in life than being overweight.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Good post, Jason...this in particular^^^!!! You're correct, it can't be done until the person
on the receiving end is ready to make the necessary changes (again
medical conditions excluded...and some not)!! Living a healthy lifestyle is not about being
skinny, it's about being healthy!!

I say this as I'm eating double~stuff oreo's~usually I just slap them directly
on my ass, but today I want to taste them~ baaaaaaaaaaddddd!!!

I’m not talking about losing 10 or 15 measly pounds so please don’t come back at me with your heroic story of that one summer when you chunked all the way up to 150 & had to drop a few by running track. I’m talking about those who’ve lost a significant amount of weight.

No such story for me, I've always watched myself so far. But, with that said, I'm still young and do have a decently hard time gaining weight right now, but I've never been one of those guys that's just rail-thin by build and can just eat McD's 7 days a week with no repercussions. I will gain weight if I do that. Sure, I've gained 5-10 lbs here and there which most people probably really couldn't see on me, but I know what I was doing wrong and I know how I fix it when I do gain.

We all have the same inclinations and tendencies. When I get swamped at work and miss a few days of working out, then say I get sick from overworking, all of a sudden I've missed a week and a half at the gym and it's hard to get back once you break routine. Anyone, thin or fatter than a globe, can relate to that. When I get a craving for junk food, sometimes I eat it. When I'm eating a really good meal, sometimes I overeat. You don't have to be 800 pounds to relate to someone's fitness/weight loss struggle.

JasonD wrote:I find it amazing that the so called diet experts always seem to come up with new & improved ways to curb someone’s appetite: “Here, eat 'this' & you won’t be hungry.” To me, that makes about as much sense as telling an alcoholic, “Here, have a great big glass of water & you won’t be thirsty.” I’m no expert on either vice, but I’d be willing to wager that an overweight person doesn’t overeat b/c they’re hungry anymore than an alcoholic has a drink b/c they're thirsty.

I think when you’re addressing the issue of losing weight, some people tend to oversimplify the problem. I think it’s much more deeply rooted than casually telling someone to cut back on their consumption while increasing their level of activity.

Sure, there are a lot of things that can go into being morbidly obese, ranging anywhere from total lack of self-respect or restraint when eating to genetic problems to emotional problems in between. Most of those things don't apply to the average person looking to cut 20-40 lbs. You're trying to lump everyone who wants to lose a little weight into this single uniform group that treats them almost as if they are emotional wrecks who have addiction problems to eating, which is kinda insulting to them.

For most people, they get older, work and family obligations take over, they can't eat like they used to and all of a sudden they wake up one day and realize they've gained 20-40 lbs. Nothing more, nothing less. For this average person, a change in eating habits and some exercise will indeed go a long way. For the average person, the biggest obstacle is not deep-seated issues like you talk about, but merely the fact that it's frustrating when you are out of shape, start hitting the gym and get really sore, and the initial results don't come for a few weeks. That makes it very hard to stick with it, especially when you're sacrificing free time to make it there.

It's not just about being healthy and living til you're 110. I have a bad family history with heart disease and my dad had to get triple bypass at 50 despite being very active and never being overweight [though not the best eater] his whole life... that could easily happen to me even if I never gain any weight. Hereditary cholesterol is a bitch.

It's about feeling better day to day and long-term. You sleep better, you release tension, you have more energy day-to-day, more focus day-to-day etc. Exercise has always been both a great time management tool and a great stress management tool for me. I never feel overly stressed, ever, and I'm neither the most easygoing nor the most uptight person. I chalk it up to staying on a gym schedule more than anything else.

Truer words have never been spoken, man. But as WalkInMyShoes said; It all comes down to a personal choice. Fun story: Was at the store today cause I needed some oatmeal, and ended up buying a frozen pizza too. :o Didn't get to eat it though, cause I managed to burn my hands on the oven and lost all the god damn topping on the floor. So now I look like some wreck of a self hurting/burning Twilight fan - and I'm still hungry! Moral of the story? I'm never buying a frozen pizza again

Oh, and before I forget it: There's SIX people on this forum who has now voted for number 4: I hate Parfait.
I don't get it?! What did I ever do to you?

I've definitely realized the best way to eat well is to let yourself have good stuff a few times a week.

My best frozen pizza story was a few years back... my friends and I bought one while buying booze and we cooked it at 2:30 AM hammered off our asses... turns out we forgot to take the cardboard off the bottom of the pizza. It cooked to the cardboard !

We were so fucked up and so hungry that we fuckin ate it, but it was gross. Then we walked a mile to the store to buy another one while hammering beer on the way (open container was illegal, so that wasn't smart).

I think this is a good idea - it's all about finding something sustainable that you can do. If you feel too deprived, you can't possibly follow that plan - it's just not human nature to be perfect in what you take in. Even cardboard Ehwmatt probably has some nutritional value - LOL! :D
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

For sure, I gotta have pizza, Chipotle, Mexican food, Chinese food etc in my life. I love them too much. Luckily, I don't have much of a vice for stuff that can really get you by sneaking up on you, like McDonald's and other fast food. I rarely enjoy that stuff
