What about Neal's solo album or his first ever solo tour? Talk seems to have died down about those endeavors.
So, are you already making an excuse in case Arnel does write something really good for the new CD? As I remember that was your criteria for him being more than just a good sound alike and getting credit as a contributor.
As far as a mention of Arnel, I thought Neal brought up a while ago that he and Arnel were writing. Now he is writing with Cain allegedly, one doesn't discount the other.
I don't need to make an excuse for him. I listened to his original music and know what to expect from him in that department. If you remember in the interviews where Cain has talked about creating music with Perry, lyrics were only half the game with them. There magic came from constructing a melody around what they were writing also.
As far as criteria for contributing, I would hold any singer to the same standard. I noticed right away that Kelly Hansen had at least 10 writing credits on Foreigner's new album. if he hadn't I would have been critical of it.
I don't give Arnel credit for anything the band achieved before his tenure, the same way I don't give Augeri any credit for anything Pre-Arrival. Besides their voices, the only thing they can bring to the band is their writing ability and that is what I judge them on. I'm not giving therm extra credit for saving the band, blowing their voice out, being homeless, etc. That has nothing to do with Journey's legacy as far as I'm concerned.
I think you missed my point, your stating that "Perhaps they'll still drop his name on a few credits just to appease his fans" seems to me, it gives you a way out in admitting that he did contribute something to the new CD, especially if its really good. I just want to be clear on your meaning.

A way out?
If his name appears as a writer on even a minor hit for Journey, Ill definitely give him credit for that.
Is that clear enough? If it comes to pass and I say something different, you can throw this post in my face.

Oh, only a minor hit? Nice catch there. So are we talking AATY hit or DSB?

Revelation has given them a new leash.
With Neal back to caring about Journey, (and not just phoning it in as with Generations), I'm optimistic they will deliver a classic.

I think the the "extensions" on several of the hits last tour (ex. Separate Ways, Anyway You Want it) are a harbinger of good things to come.

Nice. And, Neal, rock it out, but I still want mid-tempo songs and ballads too. Use some of the moodiness of Arrival as far as melody on some songs and intros. And how about a two CD package? Make the second CD live songs (new and old) such as What I Needed extended version, Change for the Better, Where Did I Lose Your Love, When You Love A Woman, One More, etc. Even Separate Ways extended version.

Plus 1 and how about Blue Ray of Live in Manilla because the sound is crap lol![]()

If there next release is supposed to be a concept album, how do the extensions done to live classic tunes tie in with that? Are you specifically talking about their live shows when you say "a harbinger of good things to come"?

I hope they don't hurry the process. I guess since they are not touring in 2010, I'd lay odds that this next album won't be released until the end of the year.

I'll agree with that. They're recording it in April, release it in October/November (maybe?), do a short run through arenas (with a support act) at the end of the year to support it and get Journey's name back out there, then go out on a major tour in 2011 through amphitheaters.

And Pineda is still in the Philippines, so, so much for his participation in this project, unless he's already written his part. It just seems odd to me that if you're gonna write, you'd want your lead singer on hand for the process.

They didn't need him for Revelation. If Neal and Jon are on the same page about what they're trying to create, do they really need a third writer who might not totally understand what they're going for here?

Aren't melodies and stuff played during the writing process and sung a bit too? It would seem they would want to try some stuff out on his vocals as they go.

On a normal pop album, yes. If this is a true concept album, Everything will have a flow and the vocals and melody will just adapt to the story being presented through the music. At least, Pink Floyd had done it that way, Roger bringing everything in and the rest of the band plugging into the storyline.
However they do it, it's quite exciting to see them break away from the same rock/ballad/mid tempo love song formula they have been connected to for so long.
(If they're really serious about this)
Arnel mentioned he was in writing mood but I don't recall him actually saying he wrote with Jon or Neal yet. If I'm wrong here, I'm sure someone will point me in the direction of a link that can verify that AP said this occurred.Since 78 wrote:Gunbot wrote:steveo777 wrote:Gunbot wrote:portland wrote:steveo777 wrote:portland wrote:Another one today.........................

If I'm not mistaken, Arnel and Neal were writing while in the Philippines no?
