Wrong. I don't care about sales numbers. It sold well for an older band on its third singer, yes, third to me. I never feel the need to make them any more than they are. Revelation has already or is pretty close to selling 1,000,000 cds, which will make it legitimately platinum, not the funky numbers. and, I realize they had to package it with stuff to sell it with a new singer. I'm not on here telling anyone they've matched their hey day. Never have said that. I don't expect it. I don't think the new album will sell more than Gold, and that's fine for an older band with or without the lead singer, that isn't a bruce or bono type success. so keep bashing them all you want b/c they don't sell cds hugely. They're doing good for a thirty-something-year-old band that most people hadn't heard about for years. and I pray this new cd is great listening from beginning to end; but if not, I will enjoy the songs on it I like, and still go see them b/c they won't be around forever, and this is a great band musicianshipwise to see live.
I am not bashing them Jana. What I don't understand is that they are good musicians who should be able to create better and put out a better effort. They have the ability to do so. I am not a basher for basher's sake...that shit gets old fast. What I am is somebody who lost the band and would like to give it a chance to get me back, but it can't be some ordinary typical 80's band crap. I'm never going to expect Journey to rival Bruce or Bono, that will never happen. However, they're better than those "other" bands- Styx, Boston, REO, Foreigner, all of them, and everyone knows it too. . That's what pisses me off. I have never bashed Neal or Jon for their skills; only a jealous pissed off loser would do so. What I will criticize them for is being ball-less and creatively bankrupt. They better find it or this could be the end of the road for them. Maybe Pineda can actually input some creative juice? I would like to think he can offer up more than just a voice. Who knows how talented he is? We will soon find out. If he has no writing credits for a new disc, then he is nothing more than a hired singer, paid to sing songs by others. Am I right?
I agree, if he has nothing to do with writing the new songs, then he is just the singer who interprets the songs (like jss on w.e.t.) but not a huge creative force in the band, right. But I love Arnel in concert. He has a stunning powerful voice that fills the arena and compliments Journey music, so it won't stop me one nano-second from still going and enjoying a great concert or their new songs, the ones that I like.
For Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan, all those years never wrote any of the songs, until he demanded to be included in the songwriting process in the late 90s or whenever it was. I can't remember. but he never wrote the music in the 80s to mid 90s. Yet, as the frontman of the band, he was still considered the identifiable head of the band to the average casual fan.
And I agree with you, I hope they really knock this out of the park and not go by the numbers on this album. I felt like Arrival really was an evolution of the band at a certain stage agewise and yearwise that translated well into 2001 and a fantastic album overall, and I felt Revelation had a couple great songs and some good songs, the rest average, but not a great album, but a good album. You're right, they have great potential, so I hope they do have the creative juices flowing. I hope the concept idea really works.
